Pfft. You know that I'm not talking about demos here. Besides, why do you keep talking about "trying the game for free" when you could just say that you "played the demo"? Of course there are other way to try out games (borrow it from a friend, play at a store, etc) but you never mention those in your posts. So demos it is then... I remember your rant about Deus Ex: Human Revolution and how you "tried it for free" before deciding whether the standard game + "extra content" was worth your money, and how "Square got what coming to them". (I don't remember the exact details, but it sure sounded a bit suspicious to me.) As far as I know, there was no demo for DX:HR?
Anyway, of course demos are cool. Claiming otherwise would be a foolish thing for a gamer to do. But unfortunately playable demos are getting more and more uncommon these days, and I have a feeling that Thief 4 won't have a demo either. :erg: If there's no demo and none of your friends has the game that you're interested in, is there any way that you can justify the purchase without becoming one of those brainwashed consumer whores? Do you ever go to the movies? You know, there's no way to know if the film that you're about to watch is any good...
Heh, I'm still not even sure if I'm going to buy this game, so I'm hardly some consumer whore either. I'm definitely interested though and I'm fairly sure that Thief will at least be a decent game, so I'm almost certain that I will purchase it sooner or later. It probably won't be at release though, and no pre-order (I like the idea of having a physical copy of Thief too), and I still need to sort out a few things before the game even runs on my computer, but I'll get it eventually. If that still makes me a consumer whore, then so be it! :p

Or maybe just the fact that we know we're not getting a demo and taking it the logical conclusion (because of past experience with "I try before I buy"s) it's suggestive of piracy.

Why should I? For a piece of content that should have been in the game in the first place? For a tiny slice off a price that's equal to the price of a physical copy despite digital distribution being a lot cheaper?
And that just goes for the games that are good. There are many more reasons not to preorder games that might turn out to be stinkers.
When I want to throw money at things sight unseen, I much rather throw it at Kickstarter, where at least most of it goes to the developers.
To be honest, I'm not excited of this bonus level - not so much to preorder the game, that is. I'm preordering it because I want this game and play it as soon as I can, no matter what. I want to experience it by myself once again, even if it may turn to be a total disappointment. But this is the risk I'll take exclusively for Thief!
Bank heist is nice addition, yes, but it seems like just one challenge mission to be forgotten. Don't forget Thief is mainly about the story and immersive campaign. Although I believe the story will be good, I'm not so sure about some gameplay aspects. But still I'm eager to solve them by myself, before all the reviews come to life.

The lack of demo is so painful, yes... Especially when bringing some memories back to life...
I remember my first meeting with Thief back then... It was a demo from a CD of some old magazine. I sunk completely into this world. I already knew, after a few minutes of play, that getting full version of this game is essential! It was something new, fresh and so realistic. Since then I've never felt something similar. So yeah, demos are very important to us players. Unfortunately instead of demos we now have (too) many trailers, previews, reviews and gameplay movies, often with major spoilers.
Sad but true.

My one and only experience of pre-ordering was TDS and that didn't turn out very well, so I won't be doing that with this.

@dethy: after Tomb Raider I just don't want to encourage them.
@Renz: thanks for the chair. Please substitute fudge and popcorn for crackers.

Demos are "not cool"? -I'm pretty sure that I bought Thief: Deadly Shadows after playing, because of having played it. Yep. There's the DVD case in the shelf. And I'm also pretty sure that I did not buy Crysis, after playing the demo. Yep. Nowhere to be seen.
You know you have been well and truly hypnotized by anti-consumerism and DRM, when mentioning a concept that used to help consumers as a general practice, is immediately associated with negativity for some inexplicable reason. There's something scratching around in your brain, whispering:
"Don't make educated decisions. Don't be a responsible consumer. Obey the advertisements. Don't buy quality, just buy."We're not talking about making uninformed decisions, and just leaping in without looking. I think the slow death of demos is one of the worst things about modern gaming, and I'd love to see them make a big comeback.
No, what was being discussed were people who download entire an entire game off The Pirate Bay in order to "try it out", which ain't quite kosher.
...though I'll admit I've done it on occasion.

Standard price for a full product is a fair deal. DXHR is worth that. I'm not talking about "extra content" being included. Missing Link is additional content. A real expansion pack, and its fair that it costs extra. The full product is the incomplete game plus the pre-removed content that Square tried to use to encourage pre-ordering, and did use for Gamestop exclusivity dollars. DXHR is worth the normal price of videogames. It isn't amazing however, so it isn't worth the normal price plus the extra ransom to release the pre-removed content. Therefore when there was a deal for the actual full product for the standard price, that's when Square got what they deserved. I refused to play by the rules of a scam artist. I refused to be treated like an idiot who couldn't recognize that someone is taking a 50$ product apart into three 20$ parts. And I recognized the suspicious nature of encouraging blind purchase with that practice. Dishonest business practice always shows a certain lack of confidence in a product, and justifies having reservations regarding potential purchase.
Thief 4 is doing the same thing. You either purchase for the standard price something you know nothing about because you only have exactly the information they wanted you to get, or you purchase a product you do know about for the extra cost of recieving the pre-removed content. To me, every time this happens, it shows that the publisher isn't confident in the quality of their product. If they were, they wouldn't need to resort to such underhanded tactics. Funny how nobody ever seems to deflate the price of the pre-order. Instead they all inflate the price of the post-release.
Pay more to recieve what we took out of the game.I wonder if the pre-removed content will actually be on the disk? :tsktsk:

Yeah, exactly. Don't preorder games and pay into this bloody annoying system of dismembering games and ransoming the head. The thirty silver coins of getting to play the game a few hours early is NOT worth it.
