Xamiche:
You raised some interesting points and I agree, It's pretty ironic that EM are making so much of a point on how Garrett looks when he was originally meant to not be seen. If I remember right, one of the original ideas for Thief 4 was that it would feature a new protagonist, and I really wished they followed that idea.:erg:
I think Romano does the best he can, but there's no way he or EM can make this new Garrett attractive to the fans of the original series who prefer Russell as the voice actor.
If I decided to buy Thief 4, I'd buy it months down the track when it's cheaper. I don't believe in shelling out big bucks for something that I wouldn't be happy with in the long run.

OK.
now i can finally answer to the thread question...
will you buy thief ?
NO.
Why not ?
'cause it's just HORRIBLE.

Right there with you, sterlino. I pretty much cringed through the whole E3 video after the first 20 seconds. T4 is not Thief.

Other than a lot of added extras that may or may not be everyone's cup of tea (also HAAANNNNDDDSSS), it looks a lot like a graphically updated Thief to me. I mean you didn't have NuGarrett running around kicking wanton amounts of ass while keeping sneaking to a bare minimum or anything. From my experiences with the video, it was about 95% of what I was expecting. There was absolutely no Assassin's Creed elements in there (besides the HUD, but radial menus have always been a thing for consoles, and it'll probably look entirely different for the PC release), didn't see any constant 3rd person switches outside of takedowns (which I'm rather blase about, honestly). You still had peeking around corners, over things (lean forward), sneaking around, mantling, and the vast majority of the tried and true tools at your disposal.
From my perspective, it's almost like some of you watched an entirely different video than I did. No, it's not 100% old Thief, and there are some things that are a little too gamey (things like focus, and the tags floating over peoples heads, which I expect can be turned off), but it's close enough that it feels like a decade later descendant of the series.

Unless it manages to pull several rabbits out of a hat, I won't buy it. I'd need to upgrade my hardware and I distinctly remember that situation with TDS. $$$ to play sort-of-thief. That one had SR and a team that was basically the next best thing to LGS actually producing the thing (plus a FM author or two IIRC).
It will be a decent AA title I think, but it won't be OUR Thief, especially without an editor--that's part of the reason we love T1 & T2 so much.

I can agree with this. Thief 4 could end up having the best campaign of the series, with a collection of some of the best missions we've seen, but it still won't have the shelf life and fanbase T1 & 2 have enjoyed over the years. Once you play through it two or three times, you've seen it all.
But on the plus side, if it is good, it could bring more people to here and TDM.

What I saw there?! The only option is "reload last checkpoint"?! Ohhh, this is the icing on the cake.
Seriously, not only I will never buy the game, I won't ever borrow it. I will NEVER play it. Poor Thief. How sad....:(

Yeah, Lady R, I've already told my old gamer friend not to bother leaving his copy on my front porch when he's done with it (as he did with TDS years ago and more recently, Mass Effect 3 - lovin' the latter, btw). So far, from what I've seen in the E3 video, T4 has nothing that appeals to me. It looked like nothing more than an updated TDS in some places, and since I've never been a TDS fan it therefore held no appeal. The hands, the HUD, the awkward movements of the main character, that dreadful fog surrounding the whole video ...... and did I mention the hands? None of these things made me feel as though this was a Thief game, not even the graphics, good as they may be. If this is a sign of what games are going to be like in the future, then I'll happily content myself with older games and T2 FMs. I may even bite the bullet and give the Dark Mod a try, who knows?
I'm looking forward to reading the reviews of the TTLG'ers who've already stated (rather excitedly while condemning those of us who don't like what EM has done to Thief) that they will definitely buy this game. Should be interesting. I do find it ironic that the majority of those claiming they will buy T4 are the very ones who are wondering just how many options/aspects of T4 they'll be able to turn off or disable. Mildly amusing, that.
No, T4 is not Thief, imo. A travesty, a dumbed-down Victorian era version of DX:HR - to which it could never hold a candle, btw - an epic fail of an attempt by EM to use the Thief world and main character as though it's something new and trendy, only to appeal to those gamers who'll buy anything new to blast through, but it's.not.Thief. In my humble opinion, of course.

Thief survived TDS (which had a few good points), gained TDM and NewDark. Not a bad tradeoff really. T4 is more stock to the pot. FIVE incarnations of a pretty minor character/universe over 15 years (or so) means Garrett's got some legs. Maybe this episode won't be the best but it's not the last either.
Personally, I'm more worried about a Legacy Of Kain/Soul Reaver reboot. Tony Jay is dead and Simon Templeton IS Kain. Degenerate vampire claws crossed on that count. I want my Free Will Is An Illusion served with a generous side of VAE VICTUS!, so I get where the nays are coming from.

I think even though this game may be designed to get in NEW gamers to the franchise, it will ultimately be played by a "play and forget" generation. That is they way it is with most games now...play it and forget it.
I don't think this nu-theif will be an exception. Kind of sad when I think all that the community itself has done for this game, not very many gaming communities where they support a game LONG AFTER the company that made it went out of business.
People will simply play it and forget it...even the theif community.... as there will be no editor to make any new games with.
I think eventually in time this will go the way of TDS, some may still play it, but most will stick to thief 1,2 or gold.
I do NOT see a great fanbase for this particular game.
