I agree with Lady Rowena. I absolutely hate the whole concept of Steam required activation. It's one of the reasons I gave up on PC gaming for new titles. So now, I have a 360 (without internet connection) for newer games, and won't buy anything that requires an internet connection.
It may seem silly to some, but I like the idea of just being able to pay my money at the store for a physical copy, then being left alone.

Well, that's how it is these days. It really makes little to no difference. But if you don't want to play any new games based on this principle, then your loss I guess?
No, it's their loss. If I'm really interested I will play it anyway. Maybe I can borrow it, or play it at a friend's home? I leave it to your imagination.

I'll probably get a 1st-day release. There's some design decisions I'm not entirely happy with, but not enough for me to not buy it. Certainly there's less issues I can spot than I saw in Thief III, and I still put up with its deficiencies to find the game OK.
Edit - About Steam, I'd rather it not be tied to Steam, but I think such things are wishful thinking these days. I hope it gets re-released Steam-free at a subsequent date however.

While Steam is not as bad as it used to be, it's certainly not all trouble-free.
Personally, I don't need all that extra stuff that comes with it. I don't want achievements, I don't want to chat with people, I don't want to launch a client to play my games, I just want to play games.
Not to mention that Steam has you pay the same amount of euros that the game costs in dollars.
Maybe that's why, apart from the humble and other bundles, I bought only one single game on Steam last year while I bought over a hundred on GOG and Desura.

I admit at first I was mightily pissed off that I had to register certain games with Steam, but if I wanted to play the games I just had to accept that fact. Reluctantly. But nowadays it seems when you buy a game you have to register it with some online gaming service or another (Xbox Live, Games for Windows Live).
I have been assimilated. :o

Another reason why I'll wait for the bargain bin, if I buy it at all. By that time, there will no doubt be a 'way' to play without having to jump through all the online nonsense.

Once upon a time, I hated Steam; it was an annoying price to pay so that I could play my Valve games. Now I basically just don't buy a game unless its on Steam (except for some indies, but even then I'm much more likely to buy them on Steam). Online activation of a physical product IS stupid, IMO, but my way around that is to not buy the physical products. Steam is just... Hella convenient. I've bought things on Steam (very cheaply) that I already owned physical copies of, just so I don't have to do things like dig out the hardware, find and install whatever patches are necessary.

I also have this, although I tend to buy them from GOG so that I get install without needing the Steam client, I just get my backup hard-drive from the shelf. I still occasionally have problems running Steam in off-line mode for when my WiFi isn't behaving itself.

Personally, I love Steam, and I've never had any issues. I am (as of recently) taking weekly advantage of Steam sales and discounts, and it's an awesome thing to get a tons of games cheap. Also, I bounce back and forth between two computers throughout the day (home and work) and with cloud saves I can pick up on one machine where I left off on the other. It's great having this huge library of games on demand, and you don't have to track down something in a local retail outlet or wait for it to arrive via Amazon or wherever else. Instant gratification, can't beat it.
And yes, no matter how bad the press gets for the new Thief, I will have it pre-bought, pre-loaded, and will be playing it at 12:01 the day it comes out. That's just the way it is.

If I were to buy it, I'd prefer a physical copy of the game on dvd, because it's permanent. Though of course you can always burn the Steam download.
