I have only recently begun to read all the different posts here about thief 4. What it will have, what it won't have, all the complaints, etc.
And I'm somewhat of a point where I really think the games and mods the community has made and is making are better and closer to the thief mythos and feel than anything else coming out of any studio. Too harsh?

No; not harsh at all. Truth. There've been a few FMs that I felt actually rivaled the original two games. And from all I've read, seen, and heard about NuThief, it doesn't look as though T4 will be anything remotely resembling the FMs, which were for the most part, excellent. Even the ones with (*shudders*) zombies and haunts. I think the reason the FMs are so outstanding is because they're a labor of love. Not for profit.

I've have enjoyed the fan missions for many years and some of the missions have indeed been better than the actual game missions.... so not a harsh statement to make.

Hey, look at you! Talking about Thief in a Thief thread, and only Thief in a Thief thread! You go girl!!! :p

I mean just hearing about slow motion combat and that "stephen russell won't be cast because they want voice actors that can do their own stunts"...huh??? This is a video game :P
There is something called ADR? Even IF you cast someone different to be the body. Heavy Rain did that with the reporter.
But just making a decision like that based on combat in a noncombat game makes me think this won't be anything like a thief game.
It really sounds like they are trying to make assassin's creed :P
Mind you I wouldn't mind as "assassin"-like mission. Or even a mission or two with other characters other than garrett. But not for the reasons I've heard so far.

The community FM contributors have been our reigning stars and heroes since the demise of LGS. They've taken the game-mechanics and world-building beyond the confines of the original engines, and like TDM, have shown the way, shown that Thief isn't about the engine or the year it was made.

Fan missions are so damn good they also prove, to me, that Thief isn't about the voice actor either.
Yamatotakeru on 14/4/2013 at 10:52
Yeah, I think it won't be better, and I guess it's usually like that with games that have strong modding communities. Tomb Raider fan levels, for example, are much more awesome than anything Crystal Dynamics did IMO (I didn't play the newest Tomb Raider, though). And as much as I think Dishonored's Boyle Mansion was a great level, I like Calendra's Cistern much, much more :p .

Sorry but that's a wrong statement to me.
I agree a FM is mostly good depending on objectives, gameplay, architecture and atmosphere. But be it custom or stock ressource, a great voicework makes the difference in a fan mission, Ink and dust wouldn't be the same without the fantastic work from my voice team. The dream for a fan mission author would be to have Stephen Russell doing custom voicework...
First, we already have the voicework made by stephen russell to begin with, whatever happens in a fan mission you always hear his voice as a stock ressource.
Second, Slyfoxx probably has the voice we use the most in custom conversations and dialogs. Why ? Because he sounds like Stephen Russell, and he's pretty damn good at it.
When you hear Garrett saying custom lines with a different voice, it doesn't work at all. If you have a different voice, the best approach is to have a different protagonist.
