As I'm really starting to get into some of the T2 FM's, I'm curious what the current consensus is on T3. Is the editor sufficiently robust to get the job done, or too awkward?

 For my vote - still too unknown, ask again in a few months (once the first set of competitiions are over)

It's not even obvious why T1-T2 FMs became so widely created and played if you think about it, or why the Thief forums are so much hotter than the other forums on this site. I mean, there are the superficially "obvious", "intuitive" reasons people throw around unreflectively, but I've never been really sure what's *really* been driving Thief FMs for so long. I certainly don't think it was because of the editor. :p
That just makes it all the harder to predict whether T3 FMs are going to have the same "magic" in them or not ... if one doesn't even know what that "magic" is.
I know I really want to play some T3 FMs just to see what's possible.

Okay, for a slightly less cynical reply - I think this will run for a while, but maybe not as long. It doesn't matter how ick the editor is - if people like the game (or dislike it enough to desire to make it better), they will create things for it. Even games without editors at all get texture packs and FanFics.
And we have an editor, and one hell of a lineage to live up to. It may not last, but it'll be fun while it does.

Well, with all the contributions of New Horizon, Shadowspawn, & John P. I think T3 can have a fairly long legacy. The gameplay & interface has improved with the Minimalist Project and things are still being discovered about T3Ed's capabilities. Designers will take advantage of T3Ed & the FMs will definately be gorgeous & playable if they're done right.

I'm interested to see how well darkmod will launch off and how it will affect T3 FMs.

I tried playing around with the Doom3 editor & I can't get my head around it. I suppose it comes around to which editor is more comfortable to use. There might be an equal division of FMs. Maybe a few ports from one engine to another.

I think the editor is outstanding in some areas and kind of lacking in others. That said, the quality of the editor has no real bearing on whether or not people will create missions with it. DromEd has a reputation for being difficult to learn, buggy, and frustrating, but that didn't stop the community from creating some of the most amazing fan-made content I've ever seen with it.
I think whether or not it will take off will depend at least somewhat on the quality of the missions that are created in the first year or so. The best way to inspire people to create interesting things is to make something of your own that catches their attention. I probably wouldn't be here working on a T3 mission if I hadn't had so much fun playing all those T2 FMs. I'm hoping that once some more T3 missions get released, a few more people might feel a little spark of inspiration and get an idea of some of the things that are possible.
I'm not really worried about longevity or what editor is dominant or any of those things. They'll take care of themselves, or they won't, or whatever, and I won't have any say in what people choose to do. Nor should I, really. I'm worried about putting out good missions and doing my best to create things that will maybe, possibly light a little spark in someone's mind. The editor is helping me try to do that. That's enough for me, for now.

This is true in a way, because the driving force, in my opinion, is love. love of the game and desire to continue to play and to be a part of this wonderful thing. so how does one quanitfy love? and why thief instead of other games with editors because lots of people love those games too? the only thing I can think for why thief, is because it's the only one like it. think about it, people who love thief best of all games don't have much to distract them like people who love, say, doom best of all. I mean how many 1st person shooters are out there? can we even realistically count them all? but nothing, and I mean nothing really captures the same feel and atmosphere of Thief, sure there are other stealth games out there but they don't bring it home to the thief fan.
so, yes I think the editor will do pretty well. things may slow down once The Darkmod comes out but no-one knows when that will be and these fan made things often take a very long time to do like T2X did (I love T2x by the way). I think by the time The Darkmod is ready we'll have a vibrant and healthy FM structure rolling.
notice too how fast FM's come out (or don't come out) I know we have lots of FMs right now but we've had YEARS to makes them. be patient, our community will come through for us like it always has.
T3 may indeed become legendary

Well I personally loved the gameplay in Thief 3, even though it did not exactly live up to the incredibly dark atmosphere of the other two installments. I really like using T3Ed, much more than DromEd and if everyone realizes the capabilities of this new engine, then we can pull out some really great FMs (especially with the contributions of New Horizon, among others).
As a veteran in Thief gaming, I can safely say that most of us can emulate that dark atmosphere that was in Thief 1 and 2 once again with T3Ed.
Once people start getting real creative and innovative (which I see happening already), then I predict Thief 3 FMs will keep 'comin.
