This morning I turned level 10 and went head to head against my very first Will o' Wisp. I don't know what they are, sort of cloudy with a pussy yellowish color. And sparkling. Kind of like that vampiric energy creature in that Star Trek episode. You know, the one where Kirk goes all Captain Ahab on everybody's asses.
People understimate the Breton/Atronach combination in the Elder Scrolls games. They can't regenerate Magicka so people often disregard them when choosing a character. I've been a Breton born under the Atronach for every Elder Scrolls games since Arena. They are awesome characters. Resistence to Magic plus 50% chance to absorb spells, plus 150% total Magicka max--this makes them unbeatable against magic wielders.
I love purely magical creatures since they're so good for buffing my stats. I was using the ghosts down in the basement of the Bruma cathedral but their attacks are so pathetically weak. When I went up against my first Will o' Wisp I couldn't believe my good luck. Blade is one of my Majors, so I carry around a silver axe to use when I can to buff up my Strength before leveling since Blunt is a Minor. Now I can antagonize a Will o' Wisp to buff my Strength as much as I want. I start hacking away with my axe, it's silver so it works, but not very well. It damages them very slowly. I absorb about half of the Magicka they throw at me, and they're good respectable hits unlike ghosts. So it just takes a few to recharge me completely. When I don't absorb them it hurts, but not too much thanks to my Breton's natural resistance to magic. But I have more Magicka than I know what to do with so I just heal myself up. All the while I'm hacking away with my silver axe, increasing my Blunt stat. When I feel like building up my Destruction stats I start lobbing fireballs, free and loose like cause I don't care about saving my Magicka. When the Wisp gets close to the end, why, I just heal him right up with a Heal Others spell (my Restoration skill loves all this extra attention). It doesn't matter. I just stand there with my arms up in the air, a big smile on my face, just sucking in all that Magicka he throws at me. Ha ha ha! That feels so GOOOD!
It almost feels like a game exploit, but then again it also feels like fair justice to one born without the ability to regenerate Magicka on his own.
I've never been clear how magical attacks affect one's armor skill. I keep a spare set of heavy Armor around, which I only wear when I want to build up my Endurance. I'm going to suit up sometime soon and go off Wisp huntin' and find out for myself.

I hate wisps.
They just drain my attributes and piss me off.
I think I'm the opposite of your race/sign... high elf / apprentice, heh.
How do atronachs regen mana?

By being attacked with spells, you have a base 50% chance to absorb any spell cast at you
including shrine spells. A Blood Fountain can provide a few hundred Magicka this way. You can't absorb your own spells, so a Reflected spell can hurt badly.
Spell Absorption is potentially the most powerful ability in both Morrowind and Oblivion. You can reach 100% Absorption chance in Oblivion using 3 items as an Atronarch, either from lucky drops (I got a 20% amulet from a fleshy pod/chest) or with high level Sigil Stones. SA works against most spells as well as most items, a few are marked as ignoring SA/Reflect but this is mostly restricted to traps.
A trip through an Oblivion gate will let you use spells indescriminately unless you hit a near pure fighter gate.
You can of course also use Alchemy to do so, a full set of Expert tools + 100 Alchemy + 100 Int will let you make 19 Restore Magica/57 seconds potions.

True. There's always more than enough Magicka around to be had. I mainly have problems in totally non-magical situations. Goblin lairs are a pain, and don't get me started on trolls. For those times I carry a bunch of handy potions to restore my Magicka, but in most other situations I don't even need them. Even in fighter gates there are more than enough Magicka fountains.
I only just turned level 11 and so far I've been buffing my fighting skills almost exclusively. My Strength is now at 90 and my skill in Blade is about 67, and my Endurance is almost at 50 (I need to work on that a bit more). Finally I've noticed that fighting is a bit easier and I don't get pwned so much as I did. Plus I've really gotten the hang of Block. But I have been neglecting my Magic skills and I need to turn to those and focus my attention there for awhile. Bretons have 150% of total Magicka compared to everybody else so it seems like huge waste not to leverage that, at least in the later game. I want to make some huge ginormous blasto spell that will drain all my Magicka in one shot but wither even the toughest enemy instantly. So, here wispy wispy wispy. Time to eat some fireballs.

Even with 100% magic absorb, I can't imagine being Atronach. I had 700 magicka on Tuco, and even with that(and 100 destruction), I still ran out of mana if there were 3 or more mobs to kill. Having to wait for what would probably be a while to get mana back would be really tedius and slow, heh.

I'm with Tuco on this. Will o' Wisps thoroughly... aggrivate me. I don't use magic at all, and the only real thing my character can do against a mage is run in and slice him up. Once I find Spell Breaker (name check?) I'll probably better be able to handle mages.
The Atronach sign itself is pretty useless to me as well. I hate having to drag potions around. Magic users still aren't as common as melee fighters, so relying on absorbing magicka just doesn't work most of the time. Atleast for me.

'Tis true. Magicka management becomes something you have to worry about. Another detail to clutter up your life. Unless you enjoy that sort of thing. I do.

I'd have to test it, but at the level I play at(I'm 46 now), the process would be, "Kill someone with my 100 destruction skill level, then let some mob cast on me for about 30 seconds so I could kill him in 5 seconds." It just wouldn't be effective.
What's funny is that right now, I have the eschusion(sp) of chorrol(35% reflect damage), necklace of swords(33% reflect damage), ring of iron fist(33% reflect damage), which is 101% reflect damage. IT makes me immune to melee. I'm also a breton(50% resist magic) with a mundane ring(50% resist magic). This makes me immune to magic.
The only thing(I'm aware of) that hurts me is arrows.
I kind of wished I could fight Dagon now, because he didn't look like a marksman.

Wow!

It is funny being able to more or less go into the entire Imperial City, rouse every guard, have them melee me, and be able to kill them all by merely having them die from my reflected damage.
Unlike most of the "100% chameleon/reflect this or not" things in Morrowind, I don't really sacrafice anything. The shield has 10 endurance(worthless to me really), so that's my biggest detractor, along with the 33% reflect damage ring and 50% magic resist and 25% reflect spell(or whatever it is, it doesn't matter at this point), which could be a 10+ all stats ring(of perfect), but that's only two items. The neck gives me +25 swords. Every other piece is free to augment my already overwhelming DPS. Which equates to 4 digit damage spells.
