Long story short - my PC is about to ride off into the sunset (its around five years old and has been upgraded a few times) so I'm building myself a new system from scratch. There are so many threads on this forum about different things that have caused Thief to not want to run that I'm pretty worried about it.
So I figured I'd leave myself at the mercy of the experts here who have taken their computer into recent territory as far as upgrades and would know exactly how much of a fight I could be in for...
Here are the important parts of my configuration:
Processor: AMD Phenom X4 9850 Quad Core Processor Black Edition, Unlocked 2.50GHz, 4MB Cache
Video Card: Sapphire Radeon HD 4850 Video Card - 1GB GDDR3
Operating System: Vista 64
My hope is to be able to run Thief 2 at the highest resolution with all the AA and such cranked up to max - am I going to be able to run the game at all?
Thanks in advance for any answers, any help is appreciated.

Yes. You may have issues with fog in Vista64 (as I'm sure you're aware), and you'll need to use DDFix, but all reports indicate that you should be able to get it running fine on that system.
I don't have those parts myself, but I've heard of no critical issues with those parts which should stop you from being able to run Thief 2.
Processor really doesn't matter so long as you set Thief to only use one core.
I've heard of people successfully running Thief 2 on the modern ATI video cards without issue.
You were already using Vista64 if I recall correctly, so that shouldn't become a new issue. I know Yandros (among others) use Vista64 without problems (apart from the aforementioned fogging issues).

Thank you for the quick reply - I was going to order all the parts this evening so I was hoping someone would give me a vote of confidence before then :laff:
Thief 2 is really the only game I play regularly so it was my only major concern. As far as fog - I can do without it after going so long without it previously.
Thanks again!
Edit: Im currently running windows XP - my fog issue was caused by an older ATI card that refused to give me fog no matter what I did until about a week ago when I finally fixed it using an archaic fix from 2002 or so.

I plan on adding another 4 GB of memory and another hard drive (Probably a 1 TB) after I get everything up and running well.

Any particular reason why you're getting Vista on the new computer?
You'd probably be better off installing XP on it for Thief 2.
Edit: Oh, you want 8gb. Needs to be XP64 or Vista64, then.

Yeah, that and the fact that I got a free copy of Vista (retail, boxed) that a friend had and never ended up using so he's letting me have it. :D

Just be sure you actually need / want Vista before "upgrading".
Also bear in mind that it eats a lot more memory itself than XP does, so you'll need more memory than an XP computer to make it run at the same level of free memory.

Understood :) My current rig had a block of memory die and now is down to 512 MB of RAMBUS RD Ram (remember when that stuff was the wave of the future? Yeah, thats when I bought this system!) so I think 4 GB (and 8 GB when I pop the other two sticks in) will be a big difference to me. I've been suffering for a bit now :laff:

For the record, this is the rig Bikerdude setup for me, and it runs Thief 2 beautifully. I've since upgraded to a Radeon 4890 and a 500w power supply. Running Vista ultimate 32 bit.
