Why won't Skink give me any duties?

Skink-something-or-other, the Argonian head of the Sadrith Mora guild will not give my character any jobs; says he is busy making a potion for Edwinna.

I think I've seen some discussions on other message boards about quests assigned by him. I've done the mages guild before with another character and Skink didn't give that one any jobs either. I'd like to do something different this time, so is there a way I can get him to give me a job?

I had the exact same problem; the potion quest got skipped somehow, and I was stuck with the 'I'm busy' answer.
However, this lovely forum (http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=58480&highlight=skink) solved the problem for me.

I have a similar problem: I started to do the Beothiah Statue mission, and when the Orc (Dura gro-Lag I think his name is) told me that it would take weeks to complete the statue, I started doing Mages Guild quests, just to kill time (and because I had never done any before!).
So. I do some basic quests for Ajira in Balmora, and when I've done a few she tells me to come back when I'm a certain rank. So I head over to Ald-ruhn, and Edwinna gives me some quests to do (including the Potion one from Skink-in-Tree's-Shade); and then she, too, says to come back when I'm all grown up! So I go to Skink-in-Tree's-Shade, and do few for him too.. And guess what he tells me! It's damn annoying..
Then I went to Caldera to try and get some duties off of the people there.. But nooo, the word 'duties' wasn't even highlighted; for any of them! A bit odd, I think..

*EDIT*: Oh, and in case you're wondering, I did ask to be Advanced from all the people who could Advance me, and they declined..

Have you checked your skill levels? If you put you cursor over the faction list in your inventory screen, you'll get some popup text explaining what skills you need to advance. You may need to get specific skills, such as Mysticism or Enchant, at a certain level to advance. Maybe all you need is a little more training.

As for the Goldbrand quest, [SPOILER]have you gone to Kharthag Point to check up on the new shrine? It probably is done by now. If it is, just talk to the new statue.[/SPOILER]

And yeah, the Goldbrand quest worked out fine. Nice little long blade I have now, muahaha. (Just have to practice the skill now, it's only at 61. Go axes!!)
