Therefore it is unlikely that they will know it's based on the time they've been registered, and as most forums use postcount rather than time since registration to make these distinctions, the incentive to spam is not removed.
Errr, tell them?

Yeah, cause that never happens now does it?

They at least have cribed ok-ish art for most of their sigs etc. The truly apalling is generally found where the the words Strike and Counter are horribly conjoined (and it usually involves really astoundingly bad photoshop CRIMES!)

Originally posted by Subjective Effect Errr, tell them?Unfortunately, that's not as easy as it sounds. True, it could be explained in one of those notices which are shown during registration, but not everyone reads those thoroughly. They could be told individually if it appears they're posting simply to reach a status change, but it can be difficult to tell if that's their actual intention, and it doesn't really prevent the problem...

Yeah, cause that never happens now does it? Well, there will always be some level of arrogance/envy. However, it should be minimised, and adding titles such as "Senior Member" (which can appear to carry the implication that seniority over others is recognised by the admins, even if that's not the case) would be likely to increase it substantially.
The greatest advantage of the current system is that people are more likely to be judged by the content of their posts than by the number of posts they've made or the length of time since registration. Ideally there'd be no need for "New Member" status or visible registration dates either, but these do have a few useful purposes.

Put it in flashing lights. By that rationale new people will STILL post loads to try and get to senior levels because they never read the details tellling them that no such thing exists.
CoK - just an observation that's all. I find it amusing that you are the cause (root) of a disagreement that's idiocy culmanated in someone bringing about the "shut up newbie, I better than you casue post count higher and me been here long" BS whilst posting about seniority in the forums.
mopgoblin on 29/8/2003 at 09:13
I don't think it's unreasonable to assume that nearly all people determine whether "senior" levels exist or not as they read through threads. If they notice someone with a title like "Senior Member", then it's obvious that these levels exist. If there's no sign of such a title after reading through a few threads, they'll assume that no other levels exist. Therefore, it would be unlikely that there would be any spam to reach a higher level unless the levels visibly exist.

Do you think the addition of these levels would be worth having to mention them as a major part of the registration notices? I really don't see what they would add to the forums, but I can see why there could be some considerable negative effects...

Ack, you're right. Simplicity is the key to all things. You can tell anyway.
