I've only ever spent any time in these forums, so I've never had a chance to have an avatar, but I wouldn't want one. I always read the name of the poster before I read the actual post, and I'm on dial-up, so I'd probably put my head through a wall if there were avatars here. I like things the way they are. :thumb:

I moderate a tech help forum called (
http://www.dearwandy.com/index.php?) Dear Wandy (an extension of a technical help section of a UK PC magazine. We have both Avatars (limited in dimension and file size) and image sigs (sadly not limited). Of the two the latter are the biggest problem with people putting multiple images and random quotes which (most of the time) are 10 times the size of the actual post.
Thankfully with the new vB options us mods can edit sigs and avatars without having to get the Admin involved, but still, they're a pain in the arse and I rather like the simple style of TTLG. Text sigs I don't mind, but animated gif sigs are an abomonation.
And thank you GBM, that sig gave me the biggest laugh all day. :D

But seriously, I'm glad we don't have them here. Too much trouble policing the idiots.
You reckon there's more potential for abuse than images in general? I can't see how it could be any worse than, say, what Rusty whateverhisnamewas posted all over Commchat a week or so ago.

You'd be able to turn them off in the Edit Options part of the User CP, I believe.

I don't mind avatars, but I like TTLG the way it is.

I say we perma-ban anyone who says, "HAy guys what about avatatrs?"

Pictures in signatures are gay indeed. Don't EVER implement those, TTLG!
As for avatar, I do agree that some pictures will allow easy reference to the posters instead of just a name. What about following gamespy's forum where the poster can choose only from a pre-determined number of faces? That way, you have a controlled avatar and yet achieve the objective of having personalized post.
And, um, please don't ban me :)

If there's only a few different avatars, that kind of defeats the purpose of easily recognizing users.
