And in ALL of the forums I've visited in my life (quite a few) at least 50% of the avatars scared/disgusted/annoyed me.
Also moderators that have a signature image saying "Jesus loves dick". Moderators.

Avatars are way annoying, every other forum out there has them, and they look clutered and ugly (especially with sigs, some of them taking up half the screen at a time).
I think not having them is one of the things that makes TTLG special.
Of course I guess there's also bandwidth issues etc...
