Why is TTLG the only gaming forum without fights breaking out 5 times a day? - by addone

No exaggeration. So many other gaming forums I've used have had regular, consistent, daily "flamewars", "fights" and so on. There seems to be a strong conflict between different sides.
Why is TTLG such a calm laid back place compared to them? Regardless of what some of you may think...it really is calm compared to other places. As I've said in previous threads, I don't often post, I do a lot of lurking, however, and I've never seen any major arguments in this forum. Obviously there's a lot of different opinions and disagreeing, but nothing major.
This isn't a rant :P I'm just wondering what makes TTLG like this? I personally believe it's the great community and the admins and mods not banning every time someone says the wrong thing. I started reading the escapist forum and it's ridiculous how easy it is to get banned there, one member got suspended for asking why people hated Halo so much. Without even provoking any flaming.
And yet, even with all the bannings and strict rules on Escapist, there's still LOADS of arguments.

Because the rest of the forum takes it upon ourselves to make sure that the highly sensitive, introverted Thiefgen regulars remain mollycoddled. :p
But seriously though, it's pretty obvious when you apply common logic. A board based on niche gaming franchises/developers that's fuelled by a specific nostalgia isn't typically going to attract your stereotypical 13 year old console fanboys and Halo playing fratboys.
Things may change if Deus Ex 3 and Thief 4 are successful enough, but that remains to be seen. But the mainstream success of Bioshock didn't seem to make much difference, so maybe not.

And on the rare occasion that it does, they're usually put off because they can't get away with the improper grammar, l33tspeak and such that they could use on other forums.
Plus, there's a certain camaraderie that comes along with that sense of nostalgia. We certainly don't agree on everything, but LGS is the one thing that pretty much brought all of us together here, and that gives us some common ground to stand on.

I am, on occasion, a pain in the butt, and have inadvertantly ignited a small brush fire. How-some-ever, the Mods here are on the job, and have pissed on the flames successfully, and even slapped me up side the head.
Mostly we know each other reasonably well and can take the salt with the sugar. In other words, we be grownups (mostly). :cheeky:

We also enjoy the presence of quite a few sagacious fellows here whom by contributing many a witty repartee make the occasional incendiary quarrels much more pleasing to read ;)

Of course, there are some people that can't even find a forum section in front of their eyes and require special guidance. But you find them everywhere, not just TTLG, and they're always good for one or two laughs.

The "official focus" of these forums is a batch of really old games.
I post on the forums for Epic Games (Gears of War, Unreal Tournament). The community is pretty solid, but there are ALWAYS new posters who register after having had a bad day playing the games and so they feel fit to posting a hate thread threatening the devs and screaming about returning the game to Gamestop.
What's so great about TTLG is that, well, no one is going to join just to bitch about the hit-detection in Thief. Who's going to listen? Because it's a "by fans, for fans" setup, there's much less of an opportunity for people to rush in and vent.
I'd say it's also much more closely knit. Other forums have people joining for random reasons. People join the forums for Epic because they are currently playing the game, which as I mentioned earlier allows them a spot on the internet to vent. Forums like the Escapist have people joining spontaneously after having watched videos or productions from the site. But why do people join TTLG? I'd say the reason that people join this forum acts as a fine, mesh screen thru which people who vent or whine endlessly aren't able to get thru.

Beat me to it you fantastic faggot.
It's just the makeup of the membership. We have had the occasional "regular" forumite attempt to break in but they tend to either be ignored or so thoroughly ridiculed they leave. Its like homeostasis. god im a nerd
