In addition to what's already been said, you're making the flawed assumption that people here only ever want to make levels for Thief II or TDM.
Since we are on a Thief forum, it's naturally flawed to assume that mappers will map for Thief style maps. ;)
If they are here to learn Unreal skills, I would say they joined the wrong forum.

I'm going to set the fucking building on fire if this doesn't stop PDQ.
Hey, that's
my job, but I prefer nuclear weapons.

But it's a bit moot really.
You can jump into
beta mapping at TDM, which since I believe is mostly Doom with new character models and a lightgem*, isn't necessarily much of an improvement apart from having easier file formats and a slightly more stable editing suite.
Plus some lovely resources. Some really classic Thief style stuff in there.

I agree. "In a couple more years," I'll be right there with TDM. Until then, I'll keep honing my skills on T3Ed. I might try my hand at test mapping for TDM before then, but I have a long way to go before I'll consider myself qualified to be an official tester.
Why? I learnt to d3ed map (had done 2 in Hammer source before, that's it) this summer. Dragged myself up to beta mapper level. Working on my 5th map in d3ed now. Beta map and all.
I find it really quick. Waaay better than Hammer, no slow light compiles, more stable, less buggy/crashy.
Also: I put this in the tech forum days ago, no reply. Could someone answer this:
" TDM FM problem
I played The Bridge on Garrettloader, and it was great, but now TDS FMs just cause a windows XP "illegal serious error" to desktop when the FM is finished loading.
Do the briefing, start mission, loads, quits to desktop with the error box.
I thought this might be a common problem but it's not in the FAQs.
I have reinstalled the whole lot several times. Running with Minimalist of course, but I assume that shouldn't matter. I ran The Bridge with Minimalist.
Any help so I can see what I'm up against in the competition?"
I want to see T3 FMs beyond The Bridge. But I can't at the moment. Anyone help?

Did you use the Thief 3 Launcher to reset your registry to play rather than edit?
Also, I couldn't play The Bridge until one day I did it without my wireless connection and it started working. It may have been a coincidence, but if you've got a continuous Internet connection, try disabling it to see if the game starts working. I'd be interested to see if that has any affect.

I don't know or understand. Could you explain that to me?
As for net connection: it's a pure gaming PC, not currently linked to anything. It's stand alone. Updated to Sp2 though, with a CD.

If you haven't used T3Ed, it doesn't matter. I just assumed you had tried it. :p

That's odd, sounds a bit like the old memory pool problem. So when the original missions are installed it works, soon as you install an FM it breaks? Go into GL, revert back to the original missions then look at the user.ini file in your T3 install directory. Make sure it
doesn't have any entries for StaticVertexPool,
StaticShadowVertexPool and DynamicVertexPool. Also make sure there isn't a user.ini.glbu file present in that directory.
Other than that, I don't know. I haven't heard of Minimalist causing any issues with FMs, but it may be worth trying without it just in case.

I'm sorry to have to say that I disagree with you on everything. I love the way Thief: Deadly Shadows plays out. I love the movement, the control, the ability to put your back againt a wall, the leaning... I love everything. One of the few things that I think they could have done better is that Garrett should be faster. I mean, he's a "master thief" for something's sake. He should be able to zip around like WEE. Although, I guess that could lead to some balance issues, making you faster than the guards, thus always getting away every time. So I guess even that couldn't have actually been changed without making the game a little too easy.

So you mean the game should have been done even more easier by making Garrett still faster? You can outran any AI quite easily, what more do you want? It can't really get much easier than that.

You can make Garrett as fast as you want by editing the config files, using the same technique used for disabling the always-run.
