I had a thought the other day and thought I'd pose it here. Why does it seem that quite a fair number of guys play as female characters in this and other RPGs? I'm female and just don't really have any desire to play as a male character. Any thoughts? :)

Only female characters I've played was Darklene in diablo(a rogue) Darklene_EE in diablo2(a bowazon) AnEvilForce in d2(icecoress), and Britiney Speares in EQ(I could be an Erudite Bard with a rapper's name, so naturally I have to be that slut)
Britiney speares is the only optional female I have, I made her as a joke twink thing(my main is 59) as something to laugh at. I'm rather indifferent to the real Britney Spears, but whatever.
I think guys who play as female characters like to do stuff that they want girls to do to them etc... IE: Be whores. This pertains mainly to online stuffs though.(And the crossdressers I know don't go beyond innocent /sexx0r remarks)..
I don't think it has any hermaphroditic or sexual preference conotations deeper than something different/makes them horny...
Oh, right, I get to spam this:

Why do you have to post these real big and annoying pictures??? :tsktsk:
I know what you're going to answer though - because they're exactly that... annoying :ebil:
Well as for boys roleplaying girls... Unfortunately girls have first made a big entrance into RPG's and CRPG's in the last couple of years. So in order to not having parties consisting solely of brawny men adventuring in the lands of fame and glory some of us have from time to time taken upon us the sad burden of having to play women :sly:
However when you try roleplaying a character of the opposite sex you'll discover that there's a lot of challenge in doing so... And then it gets entertaining. Being a man it's rather funny playing a feminist... remember we know ourselves better and thus have even stronger arguments against us!
I don't know if this could explain it to some degree...
However girls who play CRPG's tend to get a lot of (wanted/unwante)attention - especially when it is discovered that the person behind the keyboard indeed are a woman! Most girls I know simply *LOVE* the attention and thus wouldn't trade in their female char. with a male... Simply because they might not have all the men in there remove their attention!
Funny thing for a girl to do: Make a male char. and go hitting on the other male chars online - now that would be hilarious! :laff:
Just watch the gamers go :weird: :wot:

When I get an idea for a character to play, I usually just know if they're male, female or other. Inspiration just goes *pop* and I follow.

I've always played both since Ultima Underworld. Maybe there is some deep Freudian reason that I haven't worked out yet, but I like the variety that a lot of games offer by allowing me to play any character/sex that I choose to.
If the game is great, then I couldn't really give a toss whether I'm playing Kate Archer, Tiffany Minx or Tim the Toolman. I get attached to whatever character that I'm playing. I guess that it might have something to do with growing up in a predominately female household that I don't see playing the part of a female in a game to be a bad thing.

Well, being a fair veteran of CRPGs and a couple of MMORPGs, I have found that I tend to throw in Female characters only to spice things up.
It does, after all, get very boring if the entire populace of a gaming world (make that, the IMPORTANT ones) were all male.
I have a theory that the reasons are as manifold as the gamers on these, and other, boards...
some have issues, some don't; some don't see character gender as a major issue or detail, and others do, some want to experience the world from a different point of view (for the same reason that some people choose to play as beast-race characters), and others do not...also, as regards MMORPGs, there are those who, as Tuco says...

I hate to admit it, but I think he's dead-on about that.

Plain and simple, because they've got 'big boobies' and are often wearing next to nothing...even before the inevitable nude patch.

Hmm... I play a female char in single-player games just so I can explore the extra funny bits & quests that good game developers build in, though I almost always play a male char 1st to get a good baseline to compare it to.
As to online, back in the old days of LP MUDs when I played online (*Forsythe dusts off his memories*)... well, many male players used female chars as it's easier to get eq/exp that way... female beggars were much more successful than male ones. "I'm new here, will you help me get some eq and let me leech off your group's exp for awhile? *prettyInPink bats her eyelashes* Pretty please?" You get the idea... I've no idea if that's still the main reason, but I'll wager 10 of mine to 1 of yours that it's still being practiced.
