The reward being the life of another, as opposed to anything useful to himself. That's altruism.
If you say "But he could feel better about himself later if he survives!": No. This is easily dispelled with the notion that people can do things for other people while being absolutely certain that they will, in fact, die doing it.
What you guys are basically missing is the fact that it's possible for someone to willfully choose to do something that has fewer benefits than drawbacks (for that person, and benefits here including self-satisfaction and so forth), for the sake of how it benefits another.

Thankyou flex. Jumping on a handgrenade comes to mind. Of course it is possible that at the last instant the guy thinks "hold up, these guys are assholes". I know that if I did it for you guys my last thought would be "these fuckers will just say I'm suicidal or believe I think some passing thought or memorial was worth my life and miss the point the dumbasses".
Although I think I would generally just toss it to the one of you who annoys me the most.
