Why does DX:IW goto my desktop and then back to the game between level changes? - by Stingm

I have 1.2 patch installed. I have a p4 1.5 512ram gf3 ti 200 with XP. I recently upgraded to XP and it runs alot better, but I noticed that when you hit a level change it minimizes the game and takes me to the desktop, then it opens up again after a second or 2 and everything is fine. I do not mind, but it kinda detracts from the game to leave it and come back every level change. Anyone know why this happens, or how to fix it? Thanks for any help.

P.S. This must be the only game with no FAQ. LOL

Not that it will make you feel better, let alone solve your problem, but I am experiencing a similar behavior w/Morrowind using a gf4ti4600. Have tried old & latest vid card drivers w/no change in behavior, except that when MW 'blanks out', may take 15 to 30 seconds to revive/restore video. Someone said it sounded like a codec problem but I've no idea what that means or how to go about addressing codec issues, other than changing vid card drivers.

My understanding is that codecs are used to run the game movies. They are installed by the game usually. You might explore the cd and try to reinstall the codecs. Any game or program you install after could mess it up. The same problem happens with the thief games. I hope that helps you out.
As for the jump to desktop and back, as I said its not but a few seconds. Although why yours is like 30 is beyond me. If anyone can help us please post.

Stingm, thx for the info & suggestion re a possible fix. If I can locate codecs on the game CD, I'll give that a try. GL to us both. FWIW, have read of only one other person experiencing this phenomenon in Morrowind but haven't yet come across a fix. Except for around 120 MW mods, haven't installed any other sw or games since reinstalling mw.

Usually, this happens when you are running a game at a resolution different than the desktop, or when the game transitions between resolutions ala Thief. I am going to wager a guess that the reason it takes so long on your PC is that processor and video card are slow. This game demands a fast processor and video card.

Actually the level loads do not take long at all. Just out to the desktop and back. But you are probabyright, I uninstalled it as it kept freezing up on my second trip through the inclinator. Oh well, I solved it when it first came out, guess that wil have to do. Back to a replay of Thief: Deadly Shadows, same engine, but much better and no desktop drops..lol

Yeah, I was having problems with this too, except a little different.
What would happen was that during level loads, the loading screen would minimise, the expand again, except as a static duplicate of the actual loading screen, while the real game loaded on in the background. You basically had to Alt + Tab between them, that is the real loading screen, and what appeared to be a screen dump of the loading screen at the time of minimisation-to-desktop.
Suffice to say it was annoying enough that I never realy got to give IW a chance. Arguably this is a good thing.

Agreed, maybe I will run it again with a new computer down the road.

Another thing, have you installed Microsoft AntiSpyware?
I did on my laptop, and not only did that minimizing thing happen, but when it came back, my display (which is wide-screen) was distorted to true ration (cutting top and bottom off the screen). Playback also became choppy.
I found disabling the AntiSpyware (if need be, exiting it....it will automatically reload on next system boot) solved my problem.

LMAO, re-installed DX:IW today. Loaded it up and played a bit.......guess what? It is doing that minimizing shit now. Must be contagious....:cheeky:
