What drives you to continue posting here, five years later? Seven years? A decade?! I'm genuinely curious about this, so don't take this to be offensive. Are you still heavily involved with the modding community? Do you just like the series so much that you never get tired of talking about it? WHAT?

I never get tired of it, of talking about it, or of the glee that arises when someone discovers it for the first time and can finally share in the awesomeness.
Plus you never know, if EA sees enough buzz about the game they might get off their asses and sort out the IP rights. :p

Speaking of EA, has anyone managed to get an official response from them regarding the status of the series? I imagine many of you--and various gaming publications--have tried, but I have yet to hear any concrete news on the matter.

They don't give a shit about it anymore. It's not a critical component in their money making machine.

They call it Dead Space now. It's a game that, as far as I could tell, was much closer to System Shock than BioShock tried to be. They're even making a Dead Space 2 which takes place on a space station in orbit of Saturn.* Imagine that. Expect them to milk the Dead Space franchise into the ground before they even consider putting "System Shock" on a box again. :thumb:
* Citation needed, but I can't be bothered to look it up right now. I think I read that somewhere, though.

Not a bad thing if all you want is an engaging AAA survival horror game with an interesting and semi-intelligent story. I really, really like Dead Space for what it is.
If anybody's still expecting a mainstream title with the gameplay depth of SS1/2 married to a similarly cerebral storyline, that era's over. Development costs these days can't justify a purposefully higher barrier to entry. And EA's probably not the publisher to be looking at for it.

The S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series is perhaps the closest we'll get to a "System Shock" again.
Until... Deus Ex 3!
Right? :erg:

Calling Stalker "System Shock"ish is a bit of a stretch. I found Fallout 3's HUD system to be similar, but the similarities end there. The closest we'll get is Bioshock I'm afraid.

Wow incorrect.
And to address the original question: I still care about the series because I love the games and I think they represent the best that computer gaming has to offer. The discussion/debate of what makes them work so well and which elements seem to combine to make for such an effective gaming experience is fascinating, and it seems to attract intelligent and well-spoken individuals that are a joy to interact with. The SS subforum is home to the best individuals the internet has to offer (that I've found anyway). I just love being a fan of such great games, and I think it's good to keep the spirit of the games alive because I believe in the fulfillment of any medium reaching its full potential, and to me the SS games are the closest computer gaming has come to that.

Why do I still care so much about this series?
It's the best!
