Some people like to put words between /backslashes/, but I am not a fan of this approach.
Those are forward slashes loool.

But now I know, and I'll just use
this or
this. Thank you all for your help.
Bold typically denotes a raise in volume whereas italics denote emphasis.
Accents denote you being a fucking elf.

I was never aware of the practice of using accents to emphasise words, and after seeing PotatoGuy's example, I can say quite honestly that I would most likely barely even notice them there (if I noticed them at all), which would defeat the object. Maybe they might stand out a little more in handwriting, but for typed text at least I personally don't think it's all that effective.

I've never typically associated bold with a rise in volume. For me it's usually just an emphasis on the same scale as italics, often because nobody seems to notice the italics when I use them. So yeah, when I want to emphasise something, I just stick to bold or italics, or capitals on rare occasions.
Or pictures of hot women. Because in all seriousness, it's amazing how many people pay attention to something that's emphasised with pictures of hot women.

Oh, the emphasized words are there, all right.
But you need a special pair of sunglasses to see them.
I'll do you a favor and make one of them temporarily visible.
They look like this:

You may also see some old-timers use *asterisks* instead of
italics to place emphasis on text. That's what we did back when our computers ran on hay and oats.
Bracketing a word in asterisks meant it was bolded. Underscores were used for italics. Some modern email programs even perform this conversion automatically.

The crab told me to fuck off because he's knackered.
So I did.
