I try to join the Thieves Guild and each time I am told, "We have our standards, Breton, and you do not meet them". I am level 30, so all of my skills that are on their favored list are well above minimum requirements.
I thought it was because I didn't have any of their favored skills trained as either major or minor. But, I created a new character with none trained either and had no problems joining up. I am not aligned with their hated enemy, haven't killed anyone I shouldn't have, or stolen from them, so I should be able to join.
Anything I am missing? Thanks in advance.

You can kill freinds of theirs without knowing it. I killed the evil looking elf in Balmora called Fast Eddie. I didn't have a bounty on my head for doing it but the owner in the lucky tavern (?) wouldn't talk to me anymore and the others in the bar didn't think too much of me either. I tried bribing them but it didn't work. The only other thing that would cause you problems is B.O. Look and see if you picked up a dreaded virus.

My friend had the same problem. I think it was because he did the fighters guild quest to kill someone in the Southwall Cornerclub.

Hey, I know how you can fix your problem with the editor. I will write this assuming you know very little about how to use the editor. It's pretty simple.
1. Open the editor and load the morrowind.esm file.
2. In the cell view menu double click an area that has lots of npc's in it (preferably a town). This will bring up the objects in that cell on the right hand side of the cell view menu.
3. In the right hand side of the cell view menu double click on an NPC (it says in the type coulmn), this will bring up the character in the render window with a colored box around them.
4. Double click on the character in the render window to bring up the NPC window which shows the npc's stats. Look in the faction and rank box in the upper left corner and make sure the character is NOT a member of the thieves guild. If they are, pick someone who's not or this won't work.
5. In the bottom left corner of the NPC box there is a button that says dialog, push it. This will bring up the dialog box which is huge, I have to turn up the resoulution on my PC just to see the whole thing.
6. In the dialog box the left hand side click on the topics tab, this will show all the topics this NPC can talk about, click on one you know you have (join thieves guild is a really good one). In the rest of the box it will say something like "Angoth the Jeweler is the man you want." Ignore that and look at the very bottom of the dialog window and it has a box labeled result which should have nothing in it. Add this exactly as I have it here to the result box:
PCJoinFaction "Thieves Guild"
Click ok in the bottom right. Click save in the NPC window.
7. Click file to save. Name your plugin. Exit the construction set.
8. Open your morrowind launcher, click on data files, doule click on your plugin and start your game.
9. Go and talk to the NPC you edited and click on the dialog option you added the result to. Their reply will be normal but after you do that you should be amember of the thieves guild.
I havent tested this completely but I've gotten quests like normal so it seems everything works right. With a little tinkering you might even be able to join every guild in the game. Reply if you have any questions.

player->pcjoinfaction "thieves guild"

Just curious, when he killed the guy in Southwall, did he just attack or did he taunt him? I haven't tried to join the thieves guild with my Knight, but it seems as though all of the thieves guild members still like me, even though I killed the Argonian in Sourth Wall. Maybe I should have her try it to see, but I'm not at home right now, so I can't. Anyone else have an idea whether "sanctioned" killings like that count against you as well?
