I've watched through the whole series 3 times, the second and third times in spaces of less than two to three weeks.
The odd thing to me about the series is that the first time you go through it, each season feels like a bit of a let down to some extent. Because they transition to such new environments, it takes a while to become accustomed to the new surroundings (or, in the case of the 3rd season, because they went back to seemingly familiar ground of the first season). The second time through is far more rewarding, because you pick up so much more, and on that time through, every season seems more brilliant than the last.
But looking back, season 4 is the one that really got me. Like I said earlier, it's just heartbreaking, more so once you know how things turn out in season 5. When you go back to that first episode and the water fight, it brings it home with such clarity what those kids all lost.
That's true about the series progression. I think that explains the general popularity of s3 in most places I've seen. I felt the same at the time; even thought I didn't dislike s2, s3 was that return to unfinished business from s1 and it's thrilling seeing that battle pick up. The political stuff doesn't seem like quite the major excursion/addition the docks and the schools do. You can tune it out a bit and watch the cops v those drug dealers again.
Anyways, I have nothing else to add but name drop envy right now. I love the piss balloons fight too. It really sums up that huge chasm between youthful hijinks and the serious stuff, and just how quick those kids have to put it all aside and deal with the high stakes.

Andarthiel, I have never seen an episode of
The Wire, and unless my life goes horribly awry I think it's safe to say I never will.
What the hell does this mean?
"unless my life goes horribly awry"? What?

He means he'd pretty much have to be confined to quarters before he'll watch a TV show through from end to end.

Why is he not watching the best show on TV?
Just 1 episode though?
Each to their own, different strokes and all that I s'pose.

Extended serialized televised entertainment doesn't agree with me.
(I fully recognize that this is my problem, not television's)

I lived with a friend once who watched the entirety of
The Sopranos,
Six Feet Under, and
Carnivale in the living room, and although these shows were constantly playing as I passed through our shared space I wasn't once compelled to sit down for even five minutes to see what the fuss was about.
But, having said all that, I at least recognize and respect the acclaim all these shows garner, and if the concept of spending countless hours in front of a television didn't make me break out in cold sweats, you'd better believe these are the shows I'd queue up first for extended consumption.
My point? You're dismissing gold standard entertainment in a manner that indicates you wouldn't know
The Wire from
Three's Company. I don't know the first thing about
The Wire, but I do know that dismissing it as just another crime show is idiotic.
Don't get me wrong: you have a right to your opinion, however stupid and malformed it is, and you have a right to speak it.
But we have the right to then consider your opinion on television utterly worthless.
Well when you put it that way perhaps I was too harsh in my judgment.

That's exactly what everyone else has been saying.

After reading all this ranting, I downloaded season 1 to see if I like it. If so will have to see if the DVD's are retarded expensive.
Scots Taffer on 24/8/2009 at 01:15
There's almost always a reasonable deal on The Wire boxsets on Amazon etc.

Well, I'm 3 episodes in and I'm fairly impressed. Not too many shows (outside the HBO world) can suck me in that quickly, especially not "cop shows".
