I would argue games with difficulty or games that make you think are somewhat niche nowadays.
Off the top of my head, I can think of two console games that prove that theory wrong.
Dark Souls. A game lauded for it's absolutely unforgiving difficulty. Slow paced, mean, and very cerebral. Sold a ton.
XCOM: Turn based strategy game, a genre supposedly dead. Sold a ton.
Not every game is Call of Duty.

Ahh but you prove my argument. Outside of Dark Souls/Demons Souls? What else is there? Exactly my point, niche.

But it's lauded FOR being hard.
And there is a lean towards difficulty and has been for the past few years. Its been mostly seen indie games like VVVV and Super Hexagon, Super Meatboy and so on, but we see it in Bioshock Infinite too so why not Thief?
Of course it won't be a PS4 launch title - PS4 comes out this year, Thief 2014.

Thanks for that info, I've not been keeping up with consoles lately. I, for one, welcome difficult gameplay and indie games has been a welcome source for games with some challenge. I think EM is going for a game that is going to have the most mass appeal. I can't fault them for that, they have shareholders that want to see their investment return. As a long time fan Thief, it sucks to see my favorite game reduced to ZOMG parkour, swearing is so hardcore, homogenized type gameplay. Its getting harder and harder to be optimistic but it is still early in its development. For now, this seems like a really cool game but not a Thief game.

Hold up.
You were saying that Renz was proving your argument, and yet now you're admitting that your argument was based on... nothing, because you haven't been paying attention to console games anyway.
Why would you state an "argument" about something that you later admit you know nothing about?
Shinrazero on 7/4/2013 at 21:54
That is not what I am saying. My argument was that games with more rigid difficulty are niche, drawing a line to Thief falling in this category. For every Dark Souls or SMB game there are a dozen others that stick to formulaic gameplay. I personally consider Thief to be a rewarding but difficult game when compared to most modern game offerings. Games nowadays seem to hold your hand, offer to tone down difficulty if you die too much, or remove roadblocks preventing the player from proceeding. This is because games that are too difficult may not sell as well, which goes back to my original point about game difficulty being almost novel. In my opinion, this new Thief game is likely aiming to appeal to the broadest of audiences to sell as many copies as it can. I think that because of this, some of the more punishing aspects of Thief are being reworked to make it more accessible. Notably Focus and QTE style combat. In regards to the PS4 thing, I was curious if this was a launch title, nothing more. I didn't know the PS4 was coming out this year. Sorry for the confusion. I know I have not been active on these boards, I've mostly lurked. I'm just trying engage in discussion. My apologies!

I always thought parkour would not translate to 1st person view like it obviously does for a 3rd person view game. So anyways, when will you be using parkour in a 1st person game? During the 3rd person segments they have created? And what were those segments to consist of again? Does it fit? Can we just face that it will be a 3rd person game?

I remember reading something where they talked about Garrett having to "race" to get to a target or something. When I read the article it reminded me of (

There's your answer, Goldmoon. Considering all the times we see Garrett's hands in the new screenshots, I think traversing The City in Thief 4 is going to look quite a bit like what you'd see in the video above.
It's going to be a mix of that, rope arrows, and the claw. And yes, it is very Thiefish. Basically what you're looking at is mantling, just done very fast and fluidly.

Oh *puke*!
I cant wait until New Horizon (et al) edit out all the needless "body awareness" junk! Mwahaha What, you think my statement is a bit premature?! Please dont answer that. :p
