Developing a new engine and reinventing the whole game is - IMHO - too much work to be done by a couple of shock-fans.
I'm not sure that's really true - look at the number of really good engine rewrites released over the last few years (SCUMMVM, etc.). It just takes commitment and time.

You'd have to hide it from EA's claws.

IMHO I don't think that EA really has too much problem with remakes of SS1. Afterall, they don't make any sales from SS1 (and a new version that succeeds in bringing in more fans could generate more sales of SS2). Also, SS1 has been on The Home of the Underdogs for years now, and EA never challegened that. The main reason that they would have sent the ceasation order to the Doom 3 mod would have been that the mod would have definitely generated more sales for ID. The more that is spent on a rival companies product, the less there is to be spent on EA's products.
A good example of EA not caring about a SS1 remake is The System Shock Hack Project (TSSHP) which was published in at least one well known gaming magazine, and EA just ignored it.

Those are good points, but legally EA weren't allowed to kill the SS2 mod in the D3 engine afaik. I mean, the mod team was making everything from scratch.
But I had forgot that SS1 is downloadable for free so I guess they dodged EA nicely. :p

I'm willing to be corrected, but as far as I'm aware downloading SS1 is just as illegal as downloading any other copyright owned software. The fact that EA chooses not to prosecute people who do so doesn't mean that that they could not in future.
I'm not sure which mod you're referring to - as far as I know the Doom 3 mod was for the first level of SS1, not SS2. It used extracted textures and level data and ported it into the Doom 3 engine. The distribution of this material, and the potential usage of their 'system shock' trademark look likely to be the reasons they were upset about the mod.
TSSHP was a different type of project. It was/is an engine which runs on top of the original data. AFAIK there was no intent to distribute anything that EA had created, which may be why they were less concerned about it.
Of course, I don't speak for EA in any capacity whatsoever so the above is all guesswork and reading between the lines.

SS1's full version download is linked in one of the sticky threads if I'm not mistaken, so I thought that meant the game is legally freeware. When my download quota is reset in the beginning of Novemember, I'll try to remember to download it and hopefully get it to run on my system, and see for myself why people prefer it over SS2. :)
As for the D3 mod, I'm pretty sure it was a SS2 remake. And why would they extract the old, low-res textures? Better make new & higher quality ones, we are talking about a pretty powerful engine.

I'm one of those that prefer it over SS2. Great atmosphere, plot development, revolutionary physics engine, I could go on. However, unless it's made publically available by the copyright owners then it is not legal to distribute until its copyright expires. Sorry, but that's the fact.

I thought you might be talking about Lanael's mod: (
http://lanael.free.fr/dotclear/index.php) http://lanael.free.fr/dotclear/index.php. Very definitely a SS1 remake. As to why they might use the old textures - remaking the textures would be a very time consuming task and something that should not be underestimated.

I was talking about the remake mod that EA killed off, called System Shock 2: Rebooted, if I remember correctly. They are now making a new mod called Sapphire Scar, not sure if that one is dead or not though.
