Um, yeah... maybe that's coz it's... y'know... fiction?
That's not what it claims to be though. It's very heavily based on 'The Holy Blood & the Holy Grail', which whether you believe it's authors claims or not is a better written & more enjoyable read than the Dan Brown trash.

they wrote the latin version of necrononinon, or how ever you spell it.
There is no version of the necronomicon. It doesn't exist. H.P Lovecraft made it up. The most "official" version would be Chaosium's I suppose since they the bulk of the Lovecraft publishing nowadays. No monk is writing any version though.
P.S Dan Brown is an idiot and a crappy writer.

Well, it wouldn't be very good fiction if it didn't claim that, if the characters kept saying they and their world weren't real ...
It's of a piece with the whole "reality" fiction thing in vogue right now (like the movie National Treasure, even Deus Ex, etc...). The fact that it's playing off of actual historical themes is just part of the game, and it is like a game, which means it's better when it follows the "rules".
It's a genre that you're either into or not. I thought he was effective at it, putting aside whether or not someone likes that style.
Edit: huh, this is the first time I've almost felt bad for "resurrecting" the *third* thread in a forum!

Maybe I've just spoken to too many people who think all the 'historical' stuff is true.

There's nothing wrong with inventing stuff, most writers do that. The problem with The Da Vinci Code is that the author claims, both in the foreword and in interviews, that the false stuff is actual facts. He still does, even though he has been proved wrong.
