You can't forget Jean-Marie Le Pen
Actually, this time, you pretty much can ;)
It's a three horse race between the Thatcherite Sarkozy, the Kinnockite Royal and the limp-wristed social democrat Bayrou.
If Bayrou gets through to the final run-off, then he has a very good chance of winning. But I wouldn't be surprised if he was squeezed out by Royal and Sarkozy, leaving a straight fight between those two.

The annoying thing is that the presidential elections of one of our closest neighbours will be completely overshadowed, in terms of media coverage, by the American elections

However, Sarkozy has the potential to implement some much-needed economic reforms and to deal with that permanent underclass which the French left so love to ignore. If he can create a more prosperous and less divided society through economic reforms, then maybe he's an evil you could bear to withstand for a while?
(...)
Sarkozy has a multitude of flaws (not least his deeply unpleasant populism) but the fear and loathing that he exploits is a product of the economic problems he offers a realistic solution to.
No kidding. Sarkozy's party has been in charge for most of Chirac's presidencies, and what have they done to improve the situation? Most of what he proposes will decrease all kind of taxes that burden his rich friends and leave the rest of the population in the pool of shit they're in because of the government's ineptitude. It's a real sad irony that Jospin got kicked out in 2002 because the balance of his administration, though not perfect, was quite good for a change.
Chirac's got to be the worst President of the fifth republic so far, and Sarko will probably do his best to claim that post. He's been a Minister for five years, part of the current administration, he can say what he wants, but he is part of the problem, not of the solution.

Of the three main challengers, Bayrou is the least offensive, and if forced to pick, I'd plump for him.
Bayrou is shallow and I don't trust anything he says. He's been claiming he doesn't belong to right or left for tens of years, yet for nearly every occasion he could have had to oppose the government, he just abstained. On the other hand, when it was to oppose the Left, he did. That's not my definition of centrist.
To be perfectly honest, I have my doubts on certain aspects of Royal as a President, especially on the oft mentioned international affairs, but I would choose her any day of the week against the other choices we currently have. She would bring a very welcomed change in French politics, a "kick in the anthill", as we say. She's not a die-hard socialist and already stood up to the socialist old guard, I trust she could do well as head of the state.

I moved to Spain last year. If Sarkozy wins, you can be sure I'm not coming back any time soon except for elections and holidays.

An honest clusterfuck for a change? Why not.
As far as that goes why not Criminal for president? Has an honest ring to it.
I would vote Al Gore again though. Someone said Obama might confuse the middle east into dealing with us sincerely but I pointed out they hate each other even more anyway so a name wont help. I would like to hear some of his stances on things other than I WAS AGAINST THE WAR! Too early yet?
