Duck - it's not that I didn't enjoy the dark knight (although I realise that it pretty much looks like I didn't) its just that it's so damn SERIOUS. Even a hint of arch, a bit of an eyebrow raise, would make it a lot less stuffy feeling.

IMHO both sequels overstayed their welcome. I would be harsher against The Dark Knight as it was fantastic up until the Two-Face subplot took over in what should have merited a third, standalone movie, but Iron Man 2 did it as well with the Avengers arch which was shoe-horned into the second half of it for no other purpose than to promote the upcoming movie. Even if it's the same universe it was painfully obvious that it was merely a marketing gimmick.
I loved both but the first movie in each case felt superior because it was tighter and focused on the characters. Of course they were origin movies with their flaws, but they were much more internally coherent.
Sequels' two redeeming features, the freaking Joker masterpiece performance, and Scarlett Johansson's catsuit.
Now to answer the actual OP question, I would lean towards Downey as Stark.

I haven't seen Dark Knight, but in Batman Begins Bale was one of the many issues I had with it. God, is he dull.
For any issues Iron Man has, it at least has a decent sense of humor, and Downey runs with that.
Of course, his performance in Tropic Thunder beats both.

The Batman costume during sex hands down. Wait. What was the question?

Good to see someone shares my views of those films. Bale is one of the worst things about those films: dull, pompous, and utterly obnoxious. However, in the second it is unintentionally successful: Bale's dull acting contrasts nicely with the extremely animated acting of Heath Ledger.
Can't remember where I read this, but one write talked about how in most of the stuff that comes out of the Batman franchise, Batman ends up being the least interesting character in the whole affair. Thats definitely true about the dark knight.
