SHODAN has been rule 34'd. I will not post links. Go away. It wasn't even all that interesting anyways.
My views on SHODAN's "self-awareness" are mostly based on the idea that everything in the future is going to be amazingly high tech, and in the SS world, it is. Citadel Station has a mining laser that can be used to murder all people on the Earth, for crying out loud! Who knows what kind of crazy tech those people are capable of. Attempting to apply real-world knowledge to a fantasy-world situation will only result in confusion and heated arguments.

I have no idea what you're trying to say here.
How about a simpler explanation-- SHODAN: If you're not for her, you're against her!
I think what he was trying to say is that SHODAN was self absorbed in her own fantasies of omnipotence whereas the Many where all about unification, in a communist kind of way.

First off, SHODAN stands for
Sentient Hyper-Optimized Data Access Network. "
She" was programed with the ability to make decisions on "
her" own and be self aware. Ethical constraints were in place to keep "
her" conclusions that might be harmful from coming to fruition.
Correct me if I wrong but wasn't SHODAN completly androgynous until Shock2?

When did this place become an outpost for 4chan'ers? What's next, ZylonBane replying with image macros? "No u"

Wouldn't it be more likely since the addition of the speech in the SS1 CD version?

Isn't since the addition of the SS1 speech pack/CD version more likely?
What?

Are you seriously that easily confused?
The CD Enhanced version of SS1 gives SHODAN an audible voice. An audible female voice.

Actually that reply was to his unedited post, wasnt clear who he was addressing or really what he was on about.
"Isn't since the addition of the SS1 speech pack/CD version more likely?"
Surprised you didn't jump on him for that.
As for the voice files, fair enough. I just recall someone saying a while back that SHODAN wasn't meant to have a gender and that the audio stuff was warped enough so that it wasn't specifically clear that it was male or female.

Except for the first transmission you get from her in which her voice is perfectly clear and undistorted.

In the first part of the intro she also has a normal, female voice. When the ethical constraints are removed, her voice becomes distorted, but it's still unmistakably female. The floppy disk version sometimes referred to Shodan as a he, but the floppy disk version doesn't count, nobody plays that anymore.

This whole thread started with a pointless post. So I didn't expect it to go even lower! :P What use does a gender have for an AI that as far as we can tell is unique. And given that "reproduction" could be done by copying it's even more pointless.
I dare say that Shodan even has to have problems grasping the concept of different genders and resulting behaviour. Most sane approach would probably be to dismiss all the issues revolving around that and just stay neutral.
It might even be the deeper reason for her/his - or its! - opinion that humans are insects. Maybe the programming prohibits a deeper analysis to keep the AI "sane". :P
