First off, I'm a little apprehensive to post this, noticing the red bar right above, warning about "Thread Necromancy" (I never understood that complaint - should I instead start a whole new topic?)
Anyway, I never noticed this, and would like to add my two cents.
...
........I forgot what I was going to say.
edit: oh, right - Normally, the things that are called "legendary" are not very popular with the mainstream crowd. Think of all the art and world literature that only those "in the know" make references to. With that said - Deus Ex already is legendary. In my mind, and, as well, in the minds of numerous PC game magazine editors (notice how often they draw comparisons between other FPS/RPGs and Deus Ex).
The System Shock series as well. It's only something that a few people know about, but its impact on modern games is huge.

Awww, man. Absis totally stole my thunder. He/ She (can't tell from the name) hit the nail on the head. The only things that were both popular and legendary are Shakespeare and The Beatles

True, but id took it to a whole new level with DOOM. I can't remember the exact number (Been a while since I've read
Masters of Doom), but I think it was something on the order of 500,000 copies were sold via shareware.
According to an article I read 150,000 people registered their shareware version of Doom, versus 1,200,000 copies of Doom 2: Hell on Earth sold in retail markets.

Hey, I never said I was accurate. I was working off memory from a book I read a year and a half ago. Cut me some slack, or 350,000 copies. ;) I just remember thinking 'Daaaaaamn.'
It's good that I never absolutely trust my memory and just flat out state something like
Oh, yeah, it was 3 million copies. In the first 2 seconds. I hate eating my words. :eww:

Juice Ex, LOL TheSheep.
Legend? No. Classic? yes.
Doom is really a dumbed down version of Wolfenstein, imo. I was bit a disappointed and struck with boredom back then. It's also something else. It's easy to describe the gameplay and it's "doom". Name fits and it has a direct appeal. "The world has been invaded by the forces of hell and it's your job to defend earth, start your chainsaw, chaingun or rocket launchers and spell out doom with an ice-pick..." *chop* *splat* *BOOUM* *WRRRRR*
Other simplified self-explaining concepts exists: ping-poing, pac-man, donkey-kong, solitaire, minesweeper (even though I actually managed to missunderstand this once as "Mindsweeper" until the coin fell)...but of course, marketing, name recognition, brand recognition, developer recognition, etc. counts for a lot too... And even though heavy marketing might have nailed Deus Ex as a household name, it's all hypothetical.
Deus Ex?? Hm...the name didnt do it any good when I first heard of it years ago and it looked very dark in the demo too and it didnt made any sense until I finished it, which wasn't that long ago...and then I soon discovered, much to my dismay, the lack of alternative story paths.
"UNATCO has been infiltrated by...some uh...off-spring of the former , uh...illuminati, except...you don't know that yet, and it's your job to play along until you realize your true enemy, skip the agency, become the 2nd ex-genetically-engineered-superagent (Deus Ex) and stop them...start your augmentation and don't hurt anybody until the bad guys reveals themselves."
Clear as water mixed with dirt...
A bit shallow in my coverage, but even though there's more to the equasion than a name, it also needs a name...and if the name is implicit and not easily understood...it gets a bit ambigious. That's bad news for the masses. And then we have the issue of marketing...and all that biztalk and profiling and cripes.
Is it the first in any genre? Uh, no, not really... Is it even the first hybrid? Uh, no, not really... Does it have a great fanbase? Uh-oh look at the time... Does it have a great multiplayer? Uh...I need to go. Is it really open-ended? Uh...I have to go, NOW!
I think it's a great game, a classic, but there was a hurdle...and like any other adventure game, or hybrid thereof, limited replay value for which time (and hopefully soon, oblivion) is the only cure (so that I can play it as new again, right after Monkey Island, Grim Fandango, Planescape: Torment, Fallout and the rest of the long list which is very long).
Sorry if I accidentally triggered some insightful spoilers, maybe I should just put it all in spoiler tags or simply quit.
Just to pick up on the name issue, when I think of uh, alternate name, it gets so very trite...Cyberman, AugMantator...I warned you, hehe, but what do you suggest if you even care?
