seriously, I was pretty damn sure I knew what I wanted to do when I went to college. I started as Aerospace Engineering (which I would argue is one of the more versatile and interesting engineering disciplines) and changed my major after taking a required course in Computer Science my first semester. I disagree that you should take a gap, as most people I know never return from that 'gap'. Also, why torture yourself trying to find a job in this economy???

I would recommend community college or someplace cheap if you're unsure to try and get a feel for what you would want to do. Take a wide variety of introduction courses (intro to aerospace engineering, forensic psych, management, computer science, etc). Some may call it a waste of money but I would argue that it could be the most valuable semester you spend at college.

That said, to me it sounds like you're pretty sure you want to be in engineering. I go to an engineering school and the general concensus is that the engineering disciplines have a lot of overlap. Therefore, it probably just comes down to whether you'd be more interested in designing:

bridges and buildings (civil)
circuit boards (electrical)
computer hardware (computer)
vehicles (aerospace/mechanical)
robots and machines (mechanical)
