I've read before but forgotten, one of this series was considered in the top 10 of all time. I think it was #4 maybe. Personal opinions or confirmation welcome.

You mean of the non-Underworld games?
Er... Ultima 7, The Black Gate would get my vote, but 4 was quite revolutionary at the time.

...and considered to be in the top ten by who? Opinion varies so widely amongst
any community, much less the gaming community.

Best? Of what?
Two of my favoritest games of all time are definitely Ultima 7 Part II: Serpent Isle, and Ultima Underworld II. I prefer each of these to the originals (U7 and UU1): SI because it was an entirely new and interesting world, and UU2 because it was more polished and had a bigger display.
I still think UU2 is the best "fantasy" 3D RPG. Many have tried, but all have failed to beat it IMHO. Hopefully ARX will at least come close. My two previous best hopes were Descent to Undermountain and Ultima 9, and we know how those turned out.
U7:SI has, I think, faced more serious competition in the "fantasy" 2-D RPG world, but it still ranks up there. I'm currently playing Baldur's Gate 2, which is pretty good, but I prefer the cleaner (and brighter) feel of the Ultimas.
