(those that still moan about the D3 engine based on their experiences of D3, please play Prey and see how that engine can be tweaked to give some chilling images and great game play!)
Little off topic here, but I wouldn't attempt to make a SS1 mod for any engine unless its opensource/homemade/free or from EA otherwise you'll have a cease and decist order days after announcing it. And unless you've got someone like google or microsoft backing you, then good luck with the court fees.
Oh, and for any future polls, I'll be sure to put in a "I place a legitimate vote, but i like voting so I will anyway" option for those of you *glares at Bjossi* who just can't help yourselves.

Out of interest - which did you play first?
SS2 first. Now that probably has some bearing on it, but im always discovering retro games and graphical beauty doesnt bother me too much if there's some meaty gameplay to be had (other than Battlefield 2 and Football Manager I tend to play rather old games more often, like Frontier etc).

I've just started playing Shock 1 again (yay for old computers!) which is heaps-o-fun. Rediscovering the joy of hiding in elevators, slapping on some patches and playing eel zapper. And cyberspace.
Of course, while playing SS1 I've found myself thinking more about SS2 (typical, since I don't have a PC I can play it on:rolleyes: ) and I might concede that it's a better game. Modifying weapons, hacking, and of course the look (level design, and more stuff lying around, like furniture, or that flooded bit, flavoury stuff.)
But I like Citadel station better than the Von Braun. I love cyberspace, perhaps more in concept than execution. I love the fact that SHODAN was the maintenece bots rebuilding the place. And the logs: 'In my talons I shape clay, crafting life forms as I please'. In fact, as a charcter SHODAN really adds to the game. Setting traps and ambushes for you. So SS1 gets my vote.
Oh, and on the graphics, while SS2 has superior graphics, I think SS1 has alot of neat effects. Like the side effects (read: main reason for use) of some of the patches. Or the effect an EMP grenade has on your cybernetic upgrade.

I'm gonna have to vote SS2, SS1 is harder to get into for me :erg:

Yesterday I started playing SS1, surprisingly it works on my PC, which has an AMD64 X2 4400+ and a 512 Mb Geforce 7900 GTX, the odds are small but were in my favor. :D
I'm so new to the game that I can't really judge it yet, but I love the gameplay so far. :)

System Shock 2. I tried to enjoy the original but the controls were too hard to learn and the combat was awful. Explore for ten seconds. Find an evil robot. Wack each other tediously for twenty seconds until you kill it. Repeat. :bored:

I know I'm joining this dicussion late. That last time I posted in this forum was in 2002, my username didn't even work anymore.
I say SS1. The people that complained about the interface were right. I had anticipated this game for half a year before it came out and the day it did, I bought it (9 or so floppies). I initially got so frustrated with the new style of movement that I actually shelved the game for a short time. This was the time when every FPS wasn't true 3d and was played with the keyboard.
But once I got back into it, I fell in love with the game. You almost have to have played it in the year that it came out to realize just how far ahead it was of it's time. I think pretty much anyone who really got into it could write a small book about the experience.
I bought SS2 with high expectations, and SS2 does rock, but where SS1 was revolutionary in being realistic, SS2 had silly stuff like super-unreasonable weapon decay or the fact that you can't use stuff like a shotgun if you didn't have a certain level in that category, which just annoyed me to no end. I could of understood having crappy damage points or whatever other side effects; but not being able to pull the trigger on a certain weapon you dont have a certain skill level.. ugh.

It was a gameplay-related thing about the weapon skill requirements. Realism and gameplay aren't always friends.
