Essentially I need another motherboard, my current one is an absolute POS. I have to keep my PC on perpetually 24/7, otherwise I lose access to one of my HDDs and/or I also have to the clear CMOS before boot-up. Lesson that I learnt: I'm not touching another Gigabyte mobo in future.
So I thought that I may as well grab a new CPU as well. I was thinking either a Wolfdale dual core or a Q6600 G0.
Would getting the faster clocked dual core, on the shrunken die, be a better idea than buying the long in tooth, but potentially more powerful Q6600? I don't plan on overclocking, BTW. Also cooling is not an issue.
Does anything aside from encoding/ripping (and folding, LOL) realistically take advantage of quad core? I mostly play games on my machine.
Also would it be a waste of time considering a E8500, rather than a E8400?
My current specs:-
E6400 2.13GHz
Gigabyte P965-S3
4GB DDR2-667
8800GT 512MB
Auzen X-fi Prelude
Thanks in advance.

I recommend the E8400, it overclocks like a demon and the 6mb cache gives its a nice boost over the E6400. Dont bother with the E8500 as the extra cash it will cost aint worth it.
btw I have a E8400 in my gigabyte X38_DS5.

My PC is now equipped with a E8500 + a Asus P5Q Pro.
Against my gut feeling, I was going to buy a Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3, but the bloody thing wouldn't POST with my 8800GT (it would with one of the shop's though) when the shop technician installed it.
Gigabyte proves once again that their motherboards are only good for fueling a fire.

take the gigabyte back and get a DFI instead.

Huh? I'm running an Asus now. I've had no troubles with it thus far.

Gigabyte boards are ok but higher models (DS4 and up - and that with exceptions sometimes, too). So biker's DS5 is decent at least, pretty sure. Lower end models are a disgrace, usually.
EvaUnit02: is your E8500 rev. E0? Have you tried to o/c it, yet ;)?

CPU-Z says that it is.

Nope. I was planning on upgrading my RAM beforehand. What I have now ain't the fastest around, 4x1GB DDR2-667 CL5.
I plan to buy at least 2x2GB DDR2-1000 CL5.
