OS, software (device drivers, programs like antivirus apps etc.) and computer hardware are those which can really mess up Thief (or other old game) if you aren't careful. Especially newest video cards and their drivers are really pain in the ass.
But if you have enough patience to try every known fix found in these forums, you probably have good change to get it work properly in your new computer.

I believe the question was
which element would be considered the hardest snag to bypass. Is it possible to get any brand new rig and play Thief on it if one sticks to Win98 or Wine? Or are there new video cards out there which simply are about as compatible with the Dark Engine as an EGA 640x480 card?
