If you fully upgrade VE you'll have no need for SpyDrone (aside from the EMP attack it's everything Spy Drone is and more) and you'll be able to get Agressive Defense System. When cranked up to tech 3 or 4, ADS can detonate the rockets a commando fires at you even before he actually fires them, which is quite convinient...

One thing that has been overlooked in this thread is the fact that some of these "useless" augs are pretty handy if you're playing a MP game. Case in point: I agree that Agressive Defense is pretty useless in the single player game, not *totally* useless, mind you, but I don't think I can recall a time when I played through that I used it. However, get yourself into a MP game with someone who loves to camp with the GEP gun... and aggressive defense quickly becomes your favorite aug. ;)
Also, I agree with what Straylight said about the EMP shield. Not a lot of use for it in the single player game, but again, where good use of your augs is very important in a MP game, you might want to be on the lookout for the opponents that would lob EMP grenades at you.
I'm not going to analyze the rest of the augs, but I just wanted to bring up a different frame of reference to think about them in. :)

Agreed, I practically use the exact opposite set of augs in MP compared with SP.

actually straylight I've beaten the game on realistic and on hard, and both times I used REGEN. I activate it in the middle of a firefight and (with it fully upgraded) am healing 40 point of health a second, and since I don't sit there like a lame duck I usually take far less. this, along with my fully upgraded ballistic shield allow me to take TONS of punishment and keep ticking. plus with a high regen rate you can go through environmental hazards safely w/o a suit, and can even keep yourself from drowning, by healing faster than you take damage, with no air.

Well with regen, ballistic protection, and ADS activated, one is practically invincible even with bots and commandos firing at you. The speed aug is useful too, to get past danger with ease, like toxic waste.

Originally posted by vesuvius actually straylight I've beaten the game on realistic and on hard, and both times I used REGEN.I never said Regeneration was useless at Realistic difficulty. I said it became less useful at higher difficulty because you take more damage but it still heals at the same rate. Energy Shield on the other hand, blocks a percentage of the damage, so the actual amount of damage it stops does increase with the difficulty level.
And when I said that in a heavy firefight on Realistic, you wouldn't survive long enough to regenerate, I thought the rest of that paragraph made it clear that I meant using Regeneration alone, without any Ballistic Armor or Ballistic Protection. Without those, one good headshot can kill you on Realistic, and Regeneration doesn't help much after that. Perhaps I should have been more specific, but that post was already pushing the length limit.
I like Regeneration. It's one of my favorite augs. I just think Energy Shield is also worth considering, especially since the balance point between them shifts depending on the difficulty setting.

I think that the power recirculator should have been automatic (like in MP) and that regeneration should stay on even after being fully healed (but at a much lower energy drain of course). I hated the fact that I had to keep pressing regen in the middle of a fire fight which will inevitably get me killed. I also wish that combinations of augs could be activated by using shortcuts which we create. I think they have implemented this in PS2.

buy a microsoft strategic commander. It's never left my desktop since. Exactly what you're saying, you can macro aug combos, equipment combos (for instance pressing a button for "big firefight" and equiping your assualt rifles, turning on regen, power recirc, and ballistic prot all at once. It's perfect for the type of games I play most, where I need a lot of button presses, like DX, SS, mechwarrior. I don't even play RTS games, and that's what it's designed for, so I'm sure you'd get your forty bucks worth out of it.

So that is how those DXMP guys beat me!
