^Topic.
As for me, it actually didn't start out too well. I was at my cousins place... around December 2002 and he kept raving on and on about some Dee-yoos X. I only became interested when he mentioned "the freedom of choice is heavy"... but all that changed when he mentioned it was futuristic. I hate space-based games so I left it (I didn't know it WASN'T THAT far into the future). Then about four months later, I loaned an uncle a disc of 500 roms that I compiled and he broke it. He told me to pick any game from his drawers and the only one that caught my eye was Deus Ex... decided to bring it home. Installed it and love it to death now. It's my #2 game (Thief II at #1 of course).
What about the rest of you?

I only bought it after I noticed there was a forum for it here.

I was on a stealth game pahse at that time. Just finished Hidden & Dangerous and wanted something similar but fps genre this time. So, I came across Thief, ranted about it to a buddy and he said Deus Ex is even better so I bought it when it was on sale. Considered it wouldn't be a great loss (10 euros) if it wasn't good after all. Beat if six times now:D

I worked at EB for three or four years. I happened across it when it came out and I had already been playing System Shock 1/2 for years. So I got it. Still in love with the gameplay.
Of course, there was this GUY, that freaking always pronounces things wrong. "G....E...Force" or "Do-Sex" I hated that guy.

Here, just before it came out.

I followed the updates in PCGamer in early 2000 & picked up the game on release......spent most of Aug 2000 playing; a few sunrises caught me still hunched over the keyboard:D

Saw it on some demo disc a few years ago, didn't look interesting, went into drawer.
Got bored installed demo, saw Warren Spectors name, played demo to death multiple times.
Bought full game, was pissed intro gave away entire story, played it 'til my eyes started bleeding anyway.

I read a review of it in a newspaper of all places around the time it came out. I didnt buy it then, but it kinda stuck in my mind as an interesting game, what with all the reviewers talk of the gritty believable world, choice of playing style and soforth.
Then quite a while later, i got curious about scary games and cyberpunk stuff and discovered System Shock, i bought SS2, and a few months later this lead to getting the demo of it's sorta cousin game Deus Ex, I didnt fall in love with it at first, actualy unistalled it for a while without having gotten to the top of the Statue...it was only a couple months after that that i again got the demo wanting to give it another shot, only this time the extended one...durring the debriefing from the Liberty Island mission (with its moral ambiguity and well drawn charecters) i knew i was in love, and After Hell's Kitchen i had decided it was the greatest game ever.
Purchase soon followed.
