Hello,
Im a Morrowind newbie, Ive only got about 3 hours playtime under my belt. Mostly Ive been teaching myself the basics. Have a custom-made Mage at level 2 and a Journeyman in the Balmora Mage's Guild.
Here are my questions, for anyone who cares to answer:
1) Robes-Im still running around in the tattered junk I came off the boat with. Id like to buy some robes. Where can I get a robe around Balmora?
2) Cash-Whats some good ways to make cash around Balmora?
3) Any general tips or tricks of the trade.
Any help with these questions would be greatly appreciated :thumb:

There was a (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=64658) 'where to start?' thread on the MW general discussion forum recently- worth a read.
Robes can be found in clothes shops- there is one in Balmora, if you're standing in front of the temple go right and up, it's one of the shops there. There is also a good one in Vivec, in the Foreign Quarter canalworks, IIRC, and many others all over the place.
Money? not easy at first, eventually you are rolling in it and can't find stuff to spend it on. Anyway, you know all these crates outside shops? Look inside them and pick up everything they contain, then sell it. Sometimes you even find some gold. It is technically illegal, though- quicksave before you steal, but it's rare that anyone notices.
You can also venture out, pick plants and sell them to alchemists and mages. Hackle-lo leaf is relatively valuable.

There's an outfitter in Balmora who should have a robe or two - if you stand with your back to the mages guild head out into the square and it's the second shop on the right (next to the steps). There's another, more expensive one if you're feeling flush - turn right out of the mages guild and head towards the temple, go left up the steps (just under the bridge between the razor hole and the eight-plates inns, then it's the second shop on the right (the last one) up the steps, just past Nalcarya (sp?) the alchemist. Hope you get some flash duds soon - they really help people's attitude towards you...

1) For a nice (if expensive) robe, go to the clothier on the rich side of town. Her shop can be found in among the mansions on the higher part of town near the temple. You might, however, just save your money and "find" your own.
The cheapest way to get nice things would, of course, be to steal them. No risking your neck killing people/beasts and you can always reload if you get caught:ebil:. A word to the light-fingered but inexperienced - Avoid stealing in the same room as a person untill you have better sneak. Otherwise you will waste lots of time reloading. However, if you find something you just can't walk by, go ahead and try, even at low sneak levels. You may get lucky! Work on boosting your sneak skill, then start stealing from across the room while the npc's back is turned and the yellow "sneak" icon is indicating you are hidden. You can also build up skill by sneaking up on rats and scrib or seeing how long you can move around someone in town before they spot you. Just don't try clicking on anyone while stealthing! (at least not yet) If you are sneaking and click on an npc, you will attempt to pick their pocket. Personally, I find it really hard to pick pockets even at a high level, so it is generally a bad idea to try this variety of stealling untill later.
Of course, light-fingered ways are not for everyone (personally, I like taking anything not nailed down that's worth more than 10 gold, but that's just me:cheeky: ) For the heavier handed crowd, Morrowind offers other options for "free" items (robes included). Various smugglers caves, daedric shrines, dwemer ruins, anscestoral ruins, and ancient strongholds dot the land. If you are the adventuring sort (and who isn't who plays Morrowind;) ) try exploring the nearby country side for someone or some thing to kill. Smugglers have low quality robes, but some look rather nice. The daedra followers at daedric ruins sometimes have rather nice robes, but would probably be a little too rough for a level 2 mage to take on. The strongholds also have many nice items, but they are generally crawling with nasties.
Also, if you head back to Seyda Neen, then walk north up the road a ways, a set of expensive clothes virtually falls into your lap!:sly: (SPLAT!) As well as a nice sword and some interesting scrolls.
2) As far as getting cash - again, I would have to say thievery is always fun and rewarding. It really is an excellent way to pass the time in town. I don't endorse killing people for their possessions as the world is wide and full of plenty. I just find things which seem lonely and help them find a more attentive home:)
For the questy sorts, there are several small quests in Balmora and a number of guilds to join. You can join as many guilds as will allow you (only one great house and the thieves guild doesn't seem to like you if you join the fighter's guild, but beyond that you can pretty much join anybody or everybody). They give quests, but many take you outside of Balmora. There are two local, non-guild quests - one is given by the commander at moonmoth fort and the other is given by a hlaalu lady. Both involve killing people at the council club, so these can be hard to do if you don't have good speech craft (so that you can taunt them into attacking you first). I don't recall what the reward was for each unfortunately.
3) Be sure to carry a few healing and cure disease potions around before venturing into the wilds. Keep your armor/weapons in good condition or else they hurt baddies less and protect you less. Always work on improving your speech craft because it is really worth it later in the game (find unimportant people in Balmora then charm them, saving each time you get them up a little better than your last high score, reload if they drop past 50. Unimportant people are often easy to charm. So are people you may have to kill - probably to make them easier to taunt). Shopkeepers have a limited amount of money, but if they run out, just wait a day and they will refresh their supply. Unfortunately there are many weapons which are almost unsellable at their true high values. I generally just keep them, but you can also try selling them to Creeper in Caldera or the talking mud crab near Vivec. Don't wear ordinator (indoril) armor as it makes them cranky. In one of the watchtower in Balmora is the sword of the white woe. It is a very nice long sword although it can be difficult to steal (the tower on the poor side of town, upper floor on top of the wardrobe).
Enjoy your journeys in Morrowind!:thumb:
This is a very cool game!

Somethings that i always did was just go into places and steal stuff and run out. But if you do that dont go talk to a gaurd or they will make you pay or go to jail. And make sure not to steal to much stuff when you are going to get caught b/c they always know. There is also some glass arrmor In Falasmaryon on a dead guy. Falasmaryon is SE of Urshilaku Camp which is E from Khuul near the coast. Another cool place is the castle lookin places as well as ruins, but you my need to be a higher lvl. Or just go in to gaurd towers and get stuff and sell them. Srry if this isnt the advice u asked for but it may come in handy. :ebil:

* You can find a nice "free" robe and accessories if you follow the path from Seyda Neen to Hla Oad.
* The easiest way to make money is to make potions. You can find a master level alchemy set in the Mage's Guild in Caldera that you can "borrow".
* To advance magical skills, you can purchase "practice" spells. Have a custom spell made in the school of magic that you would like to improve such that the spell only costs 1 mana point and has zero or 1 duration.

Nah, the easiest way to make money is to buy the soultrap spell--I think the guild guide person at Balmora mage's guild sells it (if not it's someone else at BMG)--then take the soul gems from the mage's guild supply chest, go out, and soultrap/kill wildlife.

There are clothiers in the following places:
Balmora
Ald Ruhn
Suran
Gnaar Mock
Caldera
All these places sell robes, an exquisit, extravegant or expensive robe should do the trick.
There are two enchanted robes you can by from a wood elf trader (i forget his name) in caldera. There is:
Veloth's Robe (A black robe that can restore health) Costs 22gold
Frostmirror Robe (A blue robe that offers frost shield) Costs 512gold
But try different "CLOTHIERS" or "OUTFITTERS" or kill people for their robes...
shadowj on 28/3/2003 at 23:49
1) check clothiers and outfitters around towns
2) kill ravirr the trader, take his stuff, drop it and pay a guard, pick the stuff up and go to caldera and sell stuff to the Creeper in Ghorak Manor
Join all factions in area and do their quests
get some alchemy equip and as many ash yams and netch leather, make 3 potions at a time and use them then make another 3 potions and use them and so on
This will increase ya INT which will also increase the price, the length of time and effect points of a potion, make as many potions as ya can before the effect wears off and take the potions to the creeper, my INT is over 1000 and the price of a potion is 714 which is good for a potion
3)Join ALL factions at start and if any quests involve killin a member of another faction, taunt the member into attackin ya so that ya won't get a bounty and won't get expelled from the faction if joined to it
the most important thing to do is SAVE before 1) killin anyone ya not sure of, basically if ya not sure if ya can kill him/her then save and then kill 2) jus incase if the game freezes, when ya get further into the game,it tends to crash more often so set a save-timin schedule like save every 15-20 minutes
