I got a nasty surprise last night when i went to "my" cheast at local fighters guild. All the things I had stored there were gone (apparently the chest had re-spawned it's content)! Damn! I can not leave items on ground - like I did in Morrowind - either, since the NPCs are supposed to steal them. So, please, fellow homeless people, tell me where you hide your loot safely?

In Skinigard, the Mead tavern area(north part), in the basement is the master alchemist trainer.
He also happens to be the one you collect Nirnroots for, so there's a low likelihood of him being expendable by death later in the game(I think).
Yeah, I have stuff strewn around that basement that's worth more than everything your character has ever seen.

On page 46 of the game manual (xbox360) it says:
Warning! Don't leave things in containers you don't own! They may not be there when you come back for them!
It's quite near the end of the manual. Found it by accident. I gather many players will find this out the hard way.

I don't use containers ever, afaik you don't lose items in Morrowind if you drop them and time expires. I had items by the mudcrap merchant forever and they never went away. Oblivion may be similar.

Before buying my own house (2,000 gold and it's a terrible house) I used the Greyland to the west of Leyawiin. Putting stuff in containers is bad, as they usually disappear, but you can safely put stuff on the floor.
But there's a marauder inside which respawns. Heh.

I have resolved to leave my stuff (along with two grave robers) on the floor of a family mauseloeum in the Imperial City graveyard. In Morrowind I left my items on ground pretty much everywhere, but in Oblivion the the radiant AI supposedly can and will take items from ground if it sees them. Hence my question.

I've decided (for my first run-through, and I'm taking it very slow) to just have as much as I can carry at any one time. This is a huge departure from my previous Morrowind playstyle, which could be charitably called "obsessive cataloguer and collector." Plus, I haven't found anything worth a damn yet, except for my fire damage two-handed sword that I got as a quest reward for something or other.
Which brings me to an interesting point - I'm at about level 8, and have done a number of in-town quests and a few guild quests, and I'm surprised how few high-level items I've found. Specifically, none. I think this is a refreshing departure from Morrowind, where it was possible for a level 4 character to run across $100,000 worth of uberstuff in a few short hours without even trying. I'm guessing the good schwag is in the hinterlands, but I'm loathe to go cryptcrawling yet.

The procedural itemization is a lot more effective in Oblivion than in Morrowind.
afaik, there's a really low amount of high level items that are worth a damn that are in the entire world at level one. Every piece of Daedric, glass etc, does not spawn till you get high enough for the random NPCs to spawn with it(or the chests). I haven't found anything that resembles a dren plantation in this game.
However, at level 38, everytime I clear a dungeon about 60,000g worth of goods drops, and because I have virtually unlimited funds, rots.
I will use this post to brag about a find I had though, Ring of Perfection, +10 to all stats(str/int et all). I need to get one of those for each finger.

I've left my stuff in the abandoned house (Dark Brotherhood's place), but now i've got enough cash to buy my own house.. so guess i'll have to move it ^^

Um, once you kill him you get a key to his house. Just stash all your shit there in the bedroom and move all of his stuff into the basement. The circle round the corner and use the Tiber Septim to sleep (since apparently his bed is still "owned" even though he's dead.)
