Title says it all, I'm trying to get started down that path, but looking in the sewers and talking to the beggars is yielding zilch on where to find it.

I really think finding the theives guild is somethign you should do without spoilers. It's like, if you can't find it without help, you really don't deserve be a thief.

a little coin, a kind word here and there, goes a long way. so does reading posters.

There's plenty of gossip going around. I urge you not to read my spoiler! It's more fun to find out yourself.
You'll hear a lot of people saying the beggars work for the Gray Fox. You'll also hear from a smaller percentage of people that the Gray Fox is associated with the Thieve's Guild.
Put that all together and you should realize you must talk to a beggar about the Gray Fox. Just give a beggar enough money and you should be set. Also, do this in the Imperial City!
You will run into them sooner or later.
Just commit plenty of thieving, and do NOT reload your game when you get caught.

Couldn't agree more. I, too, was extremely anxious to join. I made a character that was essentially all thief. But stumbling on it, rather than being led to it made it SO much more satisfying.

The method for finding the Thieves' Guild contact is somewhat counter-intuitive. Are they only interested in thieves that are sufficiently incompetant as to get caught?
A better way would be for one of the beggers in the waterfront district to point you in the right direction if you have sufficient stolen goods in your inventory.

That's not how I found them.
Just give some beggar enough moolah and he'll spill the beans. Some puzzle.
