AM I A COCONUT, TIMMY?
yes...may I partake?
I understand what you're saying, it isn't their fault, but is it the United States' fault? That could probably be argued depending on the country but if not, then why should the US economy or its citizense have to take the hit? I think the US has been pretty lenient up until now. My brother is a Coasty and did a 6 month tour in the Cuba region. All they do is send them back, as sad as it is however, it is usually their home country that is quite brutal. I think the situation sucks, but I think that if people really want to live in the United States they will put forth the effort, as I have seen done and the situation can be controlled by somone.

To segue a bit, ala Komag, the minimum wage was never intended to, nor should it be expected to, provide a "living wage".
Earn while you learn, but don't let the employer take advantage of the worker and make them work for mere pennies, as I recall was the intent.
A piddley stipend while you learned how to work. Mostly to protect students and summer labor.
On the "illegal" issue, if any of us go to a foriegn country, without sanction (illegally to the illiterates), we get no medical aid, no free food, no free education etc.
Why should the US provide these things to non-citizens here illegally.
Let them all (Spanish, German, Pakistani, or little green men with pink spots), go through the process and become citizens.
For example, California pays over 26 Billion, that's BILLION people, a year to provide medical care for the illegals, of whatever ilk. True some of them pay taxes to the tune of 16 Billion a year. That still makes every citizen (not resident, CITIZEN) pay a bit of the extra 10 Billion for caring for illegals. Even if that same citizen cannot pay for his or her own medical care.
Send them back. There are a lot of people who can and will do the same work.

And all the haters who say no one can live on minimum wage, much less half of minimum wage, tell me how all the illegals are doing it? Because they ARE doing it.
They aren't paying tax on it, for a start.

Congratulations on falling into Komag's second conversational trap, "why we should abolish taxes".

I like the way you both avoid having to acknowledge that ACTUAL PEOPLE with COMPLICATED LIVES AND MOTIVATIONS are involved in this discussion, by referring to them as a homogenous mass of "illegals".
That's very classy, well done.
I like the way you assume that we don't acknowledge them as actual people, but don't want to go on for three paragraphs with examples of 'here's how it affects my friend Hortiz Fernando', so it's easier to refer to them by the commonly understood collective term 'illegals.'
That's very self-righteous of you, well done. :thumb:

Well I posted some reasonable ideas, I don't see any reasonable response
No, you didn't post reasonable ideas. You posted a whole bunch of predictable ideological bullshit:
"Hey, abolish the minimum wage."
"Hey, Privatize immigration because government doesn't do stuff well."
Congratulations, you read a little Ayn Rand and think that laissez faire is the answer to everything, but there's really no rational reason to subject wide swaths of the population to poverty stricken bare subsistence-living. It should be plainly obvious to anyone, and I shouldn't even have to explain to you, that this isn't the answer. Dignifying such bullshit with a reasoned response only serves to legitimize it.
I know you think you're some sort of ubercapitalist business owner because you got suckered into some pyramid scheme home business on QVC, but you're just an insignificant fucktard parroting ideologies that don't benefit anyone, least of all yourself. Stop insulting our intelligence by pretending there's any merit to this crap.

No you didn't, that's the problem. Not reasonable outside libertarian la-la-land anyway.
So let me see, the great plan is to strip away minimum wage. So
all low-earners can live in crappy conditions instead of just the illegal-immigrant ones. Genius! Is this their punishment for being stupid and lazy or something?
Not to mention, with less people buying those luxuries like TVs etc, that can't be good for the ecomomy. You sure you've thought this one through?
[edit]sorry vigil :(

Have any of you so called enlightened people here had a look at the imigration laws of Mexico?
I feel sympathy for those folks who come here to find a better life but the fact is we do do have imigration laws and laws in general. If you break them there is/should be a price to pay. I don't give a fuck how much a head of lettuce costs or how much I save on a 4x8 piece of drywall.
And show me one other fucking country that lets you drop you kid on the ground and that kid automaticly becomes a citizen! That little thing needs changing in a big way...and yes I have written my congressman.
What the Mexicans need is a fucking revolution. Fix your own fucking country...I'm sure it's worth the effort.
Oh and to anybody in america (because if you are not from american your opinion doesn't count for shit) who is all full of mush and sympathy for the illegals....how many illegal have you invited to live with you?

I'm sure this must be some kind of joke.
However, judging by the rest of the thread it seems that this (at best) loaded and derogatory term is actually quite de rigour in the US. In light of that, carry on I guess.
