I just purchased System Shock 1 and it won't install because the bat file is missing in the game CD ROM. I then went to XenivouS June, 2003 posting which details how to get the game to work on Windows XP, my system. Unfortunately neither location suggested by XenivouS works. I get the following message from both locations:
"Adobe Reader could not open cdshock_xp.rar because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an e mail attachment and wasn't correctly decoded."
Spent 2 hours with Microsoft and they confirmed the CD is missing the file that would allow for finding and installing the appropriate .exe file.
I have downloaded all the other items outlined in XenivouS's instructions and this one file stands between me and being able to install and play the game.
I played it back in 1994 and it's the best game ever and is a classic.
Please, I hope there is someone out there who can tell me where to find cdshock_xp.rar? Thank you.

The .bat file on the SS1 CD is hidden in some non-intuitively named sub-directory.
Try:
d:
cd \
dir *.bat /s /a
-CR

Download System Shock Portable. You bought the game, now download it.

Unfortunately I received the same message here that I saw in 2-3 other locations today. In effect the message says either the file is not supported, the file might be damaged; or it was sent via e mail, etc. Thanks for your efforts in my behalf. pukey

Thank you catbarf: I found the right web site and because I'm a newbie at stuff like this, will try to figure out how to download and install System Shock Portable. Thanks. pukey

I tried twice and so far it's not working. My cd is in drive E so that's the only thing I changed. Will keep trying. If you have any other ideas, suggestions, etc., I would very much appreciated hearing from you. Thanks very much. pukey

Wait a minute,
Adobe Reader is trying to open your RAR file? Sounds to me like you don't have a program that can unpack RAR files. Go download Winzip, UltimateZip (free), or 7Zip (also free). Then you can access the RAR file.
But it's a moot point because downloading and using SS Portable is much easier and faster, try that first. I also have an original copy of System Shock but the CD hasn't
ever been in my drive because I also use SS Portable.

I did catbarf and now all I need is a picture. Sound, color, etc., just great but no picture. I'm confident it will be fixed by tomorrow, Wednesday. Thanks. pukey
