I've just got myself started in the game and have already come a cropper with a bug -- I can't load any of my saved games; when I do, there 's a message that says, "R-click to delete game" at the top of the list of saved games, and so I can't load any other saves. I thought perhaps if I deleted the last two or three game saves I'd be all right, but I can't even locate them!

Not sure if that's the case with T3, but you could search in your standard Documents folder. Many (more recent) games seem to keep their savegames and configuration files in there on Vista and W7.
If you don't find anything in there either, one more place to look would be in C:\Users\Public\Documents (assuming your OS drive is C). That's a W7 directory, with the Vista directory being something along the same lines, though the only game I know for sure saves there is Stalker.
P.S. Google is your friend, too. You'd be surprised how often people have trouble finding a savegame directory if they haven't dealt with the My Documents scheme before.

Saved games are stored in the My Documents folder of the user that
installed the game.

The best way to find out is to use REGEDIT and look to see how it is set up:
* Select Start, and in the seach box type regedit.
* After accepting responsibility for your actions, regedit will open.
* Scroll on the left side to Computer>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SOFTWARE>Wow6432Node>Ion Storm>Thief - Deadly Shadows
* In the right window you will see SaveGamePath.
* To avoid trouble with T3 trying to write someplace that Vista doesn't think it should, you may want to change this to a new location, say C:\Thief3\SavedGames. That may save you trouble later on.

The default for Windows Vista is:
C:\PROGRAMDATA\Documents\Thief - Deadly Shadows\SaveGames
If I recall correctly, you cannot access the Documents folder, but can access the Thief - Deadly Shadows folder, so you will need to type that address straight into the address bar as apposed to clicking on folder icons through Windows Explorer.
It is not kept in the users document folder.
