What happened to the vault ? Its completly empty. Did it got robbed by garret ? :)
Or did it just got removed because of the bandwith limit ?

Um, no, they are all still there.
Perhaps it's because of the default threadview? It's still set to "last 10 days", even in the Vault. So you need to change that to see any threads (in the dropdown menu in each forum, select "the beginning").

Actually, all the archives are supposed to show 'all' threads (rather than the 10-day default like the rest of the forums) but. for some reason the main 'vault' category's view age got b0rked (damn gremlins). I have re-set it, so it should display properly now.

I suspect that the problem is that while in the Comm Chat Archive, for example, the default for that forum is set to "the last 2000 days", that only works if you have your own thread display options (in the User CP) set to "Use Forum Default". Otherwise, whatever you've selected in there (I use the past 5 days, for example) will override the forum default.
I imagine there's no way to get around that, other than what eagle said... manually changing the thread display option when browsing the archives.

Just as a curiosity... what's the default display for each forum? 10 days for the active forums and 2000 for the archives, or something different?

I do agree that I like the controversial posts. They're more exciting. But they make our forums look like shit.
