the Icarus sub-plot is my favorite in any game I've ever played so far; the conversation between Denton and Icarus should go down as one of the most memorable conversations in videogame history.
When is the very earliest possible moment you see signs of his existence in the game? And when is it that he first contacts you?
In the latest run, I saw the conversation between Maggie Chow and Bob Page where he mentions him as a weapon to be used against you. On every play that I've seen, the 1st contact is in the Smuggler's apartment in NYC on the 4th time you go to Hell's Kitchen
^^^ Is that accurate?

He contacts JC by phone once (or twice, I forgot) in Paris, and I don't think JC knows what he is at that time. May well be the (easily missed) first contact.
What's his next message though? "Your systems were very cooperative. Upload complete.", or "Observe your motivations for breaking the arbitrary laws of current government. Do not miss your chance to be one of us and create the new world order." (no, that last one seems a bit out of place for a first message)

No his first contact is definitely "I now have full access to your systems" in the sewers under Paris, that I know almost for sure, it happens before the conversation which is hard to miss. After that you see him in the bulletin boards.
What I'm talking about is the first time its known that hes out to get you, I'm pretty sure that its on the Smuggler's computer in Hells Kitchen, has anyone seen earlier?

Sounds about right. The "looking for you" e-mail would be the first evidence of the system's existence.

Not I, and I don't think there's any conversation or book text to suggest an earlier reference. We can assume that Daedalus has been around for a while, with the "Daedalus:GlobalNode:..." notation on existing computers, but Icarus ("Echelon V") has likely just become operational as JC is rooting through Smuggler's computer, or during his last mission.
At the same time, on the secretary's computer at the Free Clinic, the secretary's sister mentions NY systems going down and her e-mails being bounced; possible evidence of Icarus' "birth"/usurpation.

According to the detailed script at (
http://www.gamefaqs.com/) GameFaqs:
The first mention of Icarus in the script is the conversation between Maggie Chow and Bob Page.
The next mention is the "ICARUS IS LOOKING FOR YOU" message JC reads.
And the "I now have full access to your systems" is indeed his first contact.

Icarus and JC never converse directly. Perhaps you meant the conversation between JC and Morpheus with the following exchange in it:
Quote:
JC DENTON: I don't see anything amusing about spying on people.
MORPHEUS: Human beings feel pleasure when they are watched. I have recorded their smiles
as I tell them who they are.
JC DENTON: Some people just don't understand the dangers of indiscriminate surveillance.
MORPHEUS: The need to be observed and understood was once satisfied by God. Now we can
implement the same functionality with data-mining algorithms.
JC DENTON: Electronic surveillance hardly inspired reverence. Perhaps fear and obedience,
but not reverence.
MORPHEUS: God and the gods were apparitions of observation, judgment, and punishment.
Other sentiments toward them were secondary.
JC DENTON: No one will ever worship a software entity peering at them through a camera.
MORPHEUS: The human organism always worships. First it was the gods, then it was fame (the observation and judgment of others), next it will be the self-aware systems you have built to realize truly omnipresent observation and judgment.

While I suspect Silkworm was not referring to this, I seem to recall a brief phone conversation in the building across the street from the route into the catacombs:
Quote:
TELEPHONE
I am right behind you, Mr. Denton.
JC DENTON
Who's this?
TELEPHONE
Soon I will be ahead of you, beside you -- I will be a part of everything in
your world.
JC DENTON
Everything, huh? Is that God you're talking about -- or just a bunch of New
Age crap?
TELEPHONE
Yes... a New Age. Too bad you will not be alive to see it.

Ah yes. So I guess they did converse directly once. :)

I was indeed referring to the brief and disturbing conversation you quoted "I'm right behind you Mr. Denton"

The Email message in Smuggler's apartment can be found before the conversation between Maggie Chow and Bob Page, so I guess the answer to my question is that very first ICARUS FOUND YOU.

Really? You think
that's one of the most memorable conversations in video game history? :erm: ...Why? Heck, I'd've rated the JC-Morpheus conversation well above that, or even the one with the bartender in Hong Kong.

The game had plenty of excellent moments of dialog, but that one was particularly creepy and effective to me.
