"They" are a leveled creature type thing, and are supposed to be the same level as you, making them a fairly tough fight, regardless of level. Unless you're level 99 or something... Indeed. When I first visited the sewers, the Dark Brotherhood, they had different, weaker swords. And later, when I returned with a much higher level, they were still just as tough to beat.

The event is based on your level - the higher your level, the higher the chance the event will happen, and the number of time it will occur is greater (Up to 9 times). And they will be harder.
To make it stop, all you need to do is speak to the person that will transport you to Mournhold - you don't actually have to go there.

-Striker Thank you Striker! I had installed Tribunal and started a new game... only to be constantly attacked in my sleep by these relentless assassins. Now I can make it stop because I am not ready to tackle the Tribunal Quests yet.
Thanks again

I remember still having been constantly interrupted in the sleep by the Ash Slaves... I could never figure out why. And I was too lazy to comb the area for any camps...

I think these stop when you clear out the camp in Hassour (IIRC)- the cave/6th house base at the end of Foyada Mamaea. Opposite end fr. Ghostgate, that is.
As to the assassins, they are evidently the same level as you, so it's worth fighting them- you get good armour, and you can sell the armour you don't use. Money is scarce to begin with, after all.

I have dealt with the 'bad people', cough. And one thing that really annoyed me, is I went to their base and killed everyone outside. Went inside the one building and killed everyone. Went back outside and they had all respawned!!! ARRRRGH
Anyway, to stop the nasty people, you have to :
Go to their base, using Amulet of Shadows, and find their leader. I suggest you use a mark spell to some place safe before you enter their lair. Kill their leader, and pick up the contract on his body. No more Dark Brotherhood Attacks :)
I never killed ther leaders, still I only got the one attack that started the hole thing.
The attacks end when you
talk to the king and he says it was a misake sending them
, if you don't deal with the brotherhood yourself that is.
