Are there any possible tactics to getting a high score here, or is it simply random chance? Well, something that doesn't involve having to predict the entire reaction.

I find the best thing to do is to wait for a layout with a ring near the centre, and start from there.
I wonder whether it's possible to calculate the perfect starting configuration.

I must have hit the right one. It just kept going. 1554. Now they're all lined up in a nice orderly order. Ajare, you might be on to something, I clicked on a circle in the middle and it lasted a fair while. The score doesn't matter though, because like somebody said, it is soothing just to look at.
