well it is all because of your CPU (IMHO). Also RAM
The distance in morrowind requires CPU and not graphic card, so you can't benefit from Mor. Opt. cool features :)

But my processor is only 900 mHz (AMD Duron) and everything runs fine.
I also have:
512 MB RAM (only recently upgraded from 256, didn't make a lot of difference, though loading times are better)
nVidia 32 MB 3D graphics card
A 7200 speed hard drive- this is what made the real difference to game speed. I originally had the game on my old 4 gig HDD, speed unknown. Everything took ages to load. When I upgraded the HDD I went for the fastest one available and the difference in performance was dramatic.
A friend recently upgraded the graphics drivers on his nVidia card and he said there was a marked increase in the quality of MW graphics after that.
I don't know what my FPS is- how do you check it?
