Who cares about silencing when you're shooting at someone too far away to hear you?
Frankly, the target isn't the one who's going to hear it - he's already dead. It's everyone else, and the level design does not always permit such luxuries. I found the lack of silencer to be the biggest nuisance with the pistol. Still, when I didn't have any inventory to waste...

The poor AI. You can shoot and kill an MJ12 trooper with an unsilenced weapon from the other side of the Paris Streets map and they'll still go after you.

I use a pistol for opening crates... there's a ton of 10mm ammo in game.

Never bother with pistol or melee skill, if you know how the baton is 100% effective against normal humans, and the non-normal ones go boom, and the pistol is simply not needed because you get a laser mod in the first level, taking away any real reason to spend points on it.

All this kind of makes me curious if anyone's done a mod-less runthrough. The only mods I really used were heal (in case I took a lot of damage) and cloak (for boss battles, combined with the DTS).
I think I used Aggressive Defense once in the battle with Simons.
In the beginning of the game my only lethal weapon was the sniper rifle, which I kept upgrading throughout the game. The nonlethal approach with all the nonlethal weapons didn't last beyond the nsf levels, mostly because the game didn't give any incentive to do so (including lack of ammo for the prod, dart gun, etc). Pretty soon most of my shots didn't even take the scope, as long as I could target the head from some distance. I also used the auto-shotgun late in the game when I got tired of stealthily dealing with bots. The DTS was indepispensable as well when dealing with doors, bosses; anything with a pulse or weakness, really.
As for skills, I tried to moderately benefit from as many as I could. I was skilled in most options and the only thing I mastered was the rifle, though I think it was overkill with all the upgrades I poured into it.

I think this is the first time I've ever seen the Dragon's Tooth referred to as the "DTS". :weird:
I don't remember exactly what happens when you get it, but I remember being suprised that I got to keep it. As I remember you got contracted by Maggie Chow(?) to get it, and then ultimately she never asks for it, I think. Er, no, you never have to hand it to any triad, you just show up with it. Regardless, I orginaly thought it was way to powerful to be able to keep easily, but then later I remember being like: "So...uh...I get to keep this? Kick ass."
Funny, considering it was called the DTS by three different people before him in this thread.

I mod up the Rifle and Stealth Pistol and Assaut Shotgun a bit. The Rifle is almost perfect, it just needs a Recoil and Silencer. The stealth pistol is so perfect you can't not mod the heck out of it. The Shotgun only needs magazine increasing mods. I liked to sneak around with my stealth pistol headshotting, cause you can't kill me if you're dead, and you can't fight back if you don't see me first. When I do find myself in a sticky - or impatient - situation, the Assault Shotgun is king. For MiB's or big Mechs, I like a GEP. But I always switch back to my sniper as fast as I can.

I guess that's cool if you want to carry around every gun in the game.
