So tell me how exactly facebook makes it easier to contact with your friends and family than:
- email
- instant messaging
- your cell phone
Facebook is different. You can see posts that your contacts have put up (pictures, videos, quotes, etc.), and comment on them (and put your own up). Part of it's like a bulletin board but far better. There's also a chat option so you can chat with your contacts. Additionally, you can join an infinite number of groups on every imaginable topic, meet new people, etc. Facebook is a world of its own...once you join you may never want to leave...

Facebook - the anti-Koki.
To be fair though, I hate Facebook for lots of reasons. It's potentially great but then so is email and we get spam. At least people have stopped sending out stupid virus scares/chain emails so oh god they do it on Facebooks too! Sometimes the bs that gets sent around on Facebook reminds me of 1999 email bs all over again.

Facebook is super-useful for organizing events and sharing photos. Otherwise I hate it, but I've come to rely on it for band-related business, and I couldn't really quit it if I wanted to (which I do anyway). The best you can do is avoid feeding the advertisers and not saying anything too mean about your boss, if possible.

Yup. Nothing better than waiting 45 seconds for 16 color, 320x200 .gif porn.
edit: now that I think about it, most of the internet looked quite a bit like Azaran's picture up above back in '99. Throw an animated torch in there somewhere, and wow...it's like a time machine.

I remember those days. Netscape was king, and if you wanted to watch videos you needed Quicktime...though there were only a dozen videos online, and you were lucky if you could find them.
The Newsgroups were great, and there was a greater focus on online literature - today people are obsessed with making and uploading videos, but back then online novels and literature were booming....not anymore :(

Do what? Ebooks and online texts are thriving, as they always have. You just don't hear people talking about them as much about them now because words being sent to you from anyone, anywhere in the world is a bit old hat these days.
We've had 12+ years to acclimate ourselves to the concept. Now it's all about finding clever ways to waste the huge amounts of bandwidth we've got.
