Hi.
Earlier I logged in to my Facebook account, and out of nowhere my formatting's all messed up - I have no idea what's going on. I tried using 2 different browsers and restarting my computer, but nothing works. Anyone know how to fix this?

That looks like the standard "we're having problems maintaining a smooth connection to our servers again, so here's your page with a whole bunch of stuff not rendered" issue Facebook has all the time. Just wait an hour or two, and it'll go back to normal.
...maybe.

Ok thanks. I feared it might be a virus or something

It went back to normal when I switched back to an unsecured connection (http); I've been using https for the last year or so.
The problem now is, whenever I go into my account settings, it automatically reverts to https again, and there goes the formatting again :( (changing https to http in the url bar does nothing - it reverts back to https whenever I access the account settings)

So tell me how exactly facebook makes it easier to contact with your friends and family than:
- email
- instant messaging
- your cell phone

Although I'm stating the obvious - it's a central point of contact. In the same way that TTLG allows people who share similar interests to communicate regardless of location, timezone, work schedules and other issues that would make instant forms of communication difficult or impractical.
I think it's wrong to think of it as a replacement for more direct communication, and yes - quite a lot of what people share on it and similar services is pretty trivial. If you can get past that then it can be a very useful online resource.
