I've always written it as paedophile, likewise Encyclopaedia.
Of course, if I wanted to be pseudo-intellectual I could cite its Greek/Latin origin or god knows what.
Anyway it's just a hangover from that, and the US version is simplified.
So really, I could question why people started changing it from ae to e but never mind.

Want to know what annoys me? There was this young guy on Larry King and Oprah recently. At the age of, I don't know, 11 or 12 or 13 he started posing nude on his webcam because men requested him to do it, even started to pay him to do it. And so on and so on, he got into drugs, got molested, became a whore, and so forth. This brat gets fucking rich indulging pedophile desires, and now he's ratting out everyone who ever paid him money, claiming to be a victim, etc. Meanwhile, it turns out that hundreds of people paid to see this kid undress, people from all walks of life like doctors, lawyers, teachers, you know the drill. So of course the middle-aged housewives on Oprah are appalled at these "evil, deviant people" and "The internet must be evil!" Disgusting.
Actually, I read a poll awhile ago (I don't know how scientific it was) that stated that a large proportion of men, at least at one point in their life, have a fantasy that could be deemed as pedophiliac. However, I don't think many people actually act on that impulse...
