I know this may seem more relevant to the FM category, but I'm talking all of Thief (and maybe some games similar to it) here. What do you all think of "no kill" objectives for the majority of Thief missions, usually on Hard and/or Expert difficulty? Personally, they get on my nerves, but I (think) I at least understand why they exist.

Not killing is one of the things that made/makes Thief so special and rare. In a world full of BFG's and super fast action a nice carefully planned sneak 'round things and maybe bop a few heads is refreshing.

I rather like them. I think it makes things interesting thematically and gameplay wise when you have to think around problems instead of solving them with action.

It's probably best to make them optional, allowing for more varied play styles. I guess if you only implement them on Expert, then in a way you're making it optional. Personally I never kill any human AI when playing Thief, but others may want to take on the role of an assassin and stealthily take everyone out. More options the better, IMO.

I absolutley love them. They are part why I like Thief so much. They make the game much more challenging and add to the flair, why would a master thief murder anyway?

I'd say the vast majority of Thief players here probably avoid killing where possible. There's more or less a consensus that the game is more satisfying when you don't kill.
The real debate worth having is probably over no (or limited) knockout objectives. Personally I really enjoy those, as they force me to stealth through the levels and learn patrol patterns, but I can see how others would not.

I think the standard set by the original games of no kills on Expert is a good one. It forces you to roleplay the character the way he would likely act in that situation, but the option is available to play on Hard or Normal if you don't like that.
The way games are being made these days, the more I respect games likes Thief that say, "No, you cannot play it like that - and find some more loot, Garrett has bills to pay."

The only time I kill an AI is when there is an objective to. When I knock them out, I usually plop them on a nearby bed. G'night, guard.

The no-kill objectives are there to add another level of difficulty, although if you're a master thief you shouldn't be murdering everyone who gets in your way. It makes you take a more sneaky approach, which I always enjoy.

I find myself doing this very often also:rolleyes:. You can only imagine the headache they will have when they wake up, the least I could do is hive him a place to sleep while I'm nabbing all of his master's most prized possessions.
